Pros
Opportunity to diversify career
Top of the line in manufacturing operations
Cons
Office Politics
Very large corporation, change difficult
Pros
Nurturing environment. Team based so you are not on your own to solve problems. Geniunely care about the employees.
Cons
Not everyone has six sigma ability or desire and we should let those who want to go ahead and do and let those who don't know that it may, or may not, hinder career growth.
Pros
> Work life balance is good
Cons
> Limited career advancement unless you have family connections to management in Columbus
> Higher management (new CEO's staff) is good, but middle management is junk
> Very high business risk (stock has a beta of 1.95)
> Huge compensation discrepancies and no one (manager or HR) is willing to talk about it or address the issues
Advice to Senior Management
> Identify the relationship between compensation growth of directors who have been in the same role for > 2 years, and high performers (2+ and 1s) working under them
> If it took someone with an associate or tier 3 college education 15 years to become a director, HR needs to coach them that they can't have the same expectation from employees who have advanced degrees from tier 1 schools and are high performers (2+ and 1s)
> Mandate anonymous 360 degree feedback for all people managers as part of on track
> Allowing employees to change roles is good, but a line has to be drawn otherwise it defeats the purpose of hiring employees with advanced full time degrees from tier 1 schools to be future leaders
> Take the foot off from the six sigma pedal a little and have audits like GE does after project completion to ensure that people who get promoted by saving millions out of thin air are held accountable
Pros
Pay and benefits were good
Company is financially stable, company usually out performs competition
Good room for growth if you are in the right discipline
Cons
Office politics - many "favorites" are selected.
Evaluations - ranking of employees does not driving better performance only fear
Company not really concerned about employees, only care about how Cummins looks to Wall Street.
Pros
pay and location close to home.
Cons
wage caps that are applied per labor contract.
Advice to Senior Management
respect the hourly worker more.
Pros
- Great work life balance, if you like that this is the place to be
- Variable compensation is based on company performance not manager's discretion
- For the next 2-3 years, variable compensation payout factors should be > 1
Cons
- Mediocrity is inherent in the company culture and work is not intellectually challenging
- Lot of deadwood in middle management, people who got hired 10-15 years ago with no capabilities
- If you are a go getter, your talent and performance wouldn't be appreciated here
- Intelligence level of my peers and manager was subpar
- There's nothing in Columbus, IN for young people
- IT systems of the company are from stone age, so day to day work is not data driven
- 6 sigma is a fad, people seem to be doing projects just for the sake of doing them. Millions in savings are touted but never get realized
- Committment to diversity is good but certain ethnicities are over represented
- I have seen in many teams that only managers get to travel internationally whereas the business need might suggest otherwise
Advice to Senior Management
- Let the deadwood go/offer early retirement
- Buy Oracle/SAP, it pays off very quickly. e.g. there's no time keeping system and employees abuse it badly, millions can be saved by fixing it and productivity will increase
- Fix demand forecasting (root cause of numerous problems)
- Mandate every people manager to nominate high potential employees as part of on track
- Educate managers on what leadership is (hint: changing business paradigms for sustained long term growth in marketplace at the cost of short term sacrifices)
- If you hire someone from top a 20 school, make sure to give them adequate challenges and growth opportunities
- Not all employees need 3-4 years in a role before being considered for leadership positions (change business paradigms)
Pros
good benefits
diversity
good communication
very god support from the management
Cons
slow and non challenging work environment
Pros
Flexible about personal time and hours as long as you work at least 8 hours and get all of your work done
Cons
You may end up working overtime all the time. Most people around me work 50-60 hours a week. Senior management is just alright. Force rankings when the company is hiring so many people.
Advice to Senior Management
It looks like all employees work overtime which isn't what you want to see when you are thinking about working at the company. Some overtime is fine but 50-60 hours every weeks for years is a bit much.
Pros
Access to Senior Management, great products, great employees.
Cons
small company so difficult to get promoted.
Pros
Company culture is good
Company is growing at an incredible rate right now
Benefits are great
Great for beginning a career
Cons
Huge company; very hard for change to occur
lots of training; not sure how much is applicable
Living in Columbus, IN
There are a lot of politics
Cubicle Work environment
Advice to Senior Management
Make sure you know how you plan to keep the 30,000 people you plan on hiring in the next few years! And please communicate it. As an intern, it's great you want to hire so many people, but I
