Super flexible when it comes schedule, but there are a lot of business politics.

I have been working at Cummins Power Generation

    Pros

As an engineering technician the work continues to change with development of new product. Time is very very flexible, it is so easy to be able to leave to make it my kids school and sporting events. Most of the people are awesome!

    Cons

A lot of politics, strict budgeting, all of which leads to lack of supplies. Safety although a great practice is done to overkill and rediculos levels. Finally people who don't pull their weight seem to get a lot of hand holding and/or are just ignored, which is driving the quality employees out.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

More attention needs to be giving to the moral and work ethic of employees. While the lazy and inadequate are being ignored or coddled the quality employees are leaving left and right, soon you'll be left with only those who can't seem to get the job done.

I worked at Cummins Power Generation full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Great work life balance, career development opportunities including travel and mentoring
Company lives by its values, respects people and community
    Excellent leadership (VP and up)

    Cons

Slow to develop product, far too conservative on spending
    Below industry average for pay

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Office culture needs to improve, need a more fun/dynamic workplace. Need to do better at hiring the right people and letting low performers and those who are less committed to CMI to move on.

I worked at Cummins Power Generation

    Pros

Flexible schedule (sometimes); cafeteria and medical staff on site; good health benefits

    Cons

I was on a team with several young engineers who were in the US on work visas. Because they tend to be single and new, they are easily "inspired" to work 65+ hours a week. This was used against my coworkers who limited their work hours due to family obligations. Also, the 360 Review process and the 5-90-5% approach is outdated. [That's where you give your top 5% of people a nice raise, 90% a standard cost-of-living increase, and 5% are ushered out the door. It is based on the belief that you keep the cream of the crop and eliminate the chaff. The problem with this is that someone HAS to get axed and it's almost always support staff who are perfectly competent workers.)

Compensation is low compared to other people in my position.

Management in my area played favorites.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay attention to your people! You have very skilled workers right in front of you; it shouldn't matter if you like their personalities if they can get the job done. Hiring fresh-out-of-school talent is fine -- even economical -- but stop tooting your horn about how diversity drives the company. All of the leadership is white guys in ties who are laser focused on the almighty dollar and not the welfare of their biggest asset: people.

    Pros

    Flexible, good people working here

    Cons

You need to get into the right engineering group if you're a hands-on engineer. Hands-on engineering is starting to go by the wayside as technicians and engineers are being directed to focus on their specific roles rather than working closely together.
