I worked at Cummins as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

Collaborative, strong company with a lot of growth opportunities. Management was very receptive and the intern speaker series gave me a chance to talk with upper management.

    Cons

Very slow heavy industry, seniority is a high priority. MBA is vital for moving up the company to any high position.

    Pros

Huge potential for improvement, company has a great reputation amongst the general public. Great corporate values as well as much care and effort on the person not the "employee". Has a profit share compensation even in Mx, best food at the plants of all the companies I've been at. All around a great company to work at with multicultural involvement day to day.

    Cons

Disconnection between plants and development create an akward ambience where nobody seems to comprehend beyond their own responsibility.

I have been working at Cummins full-time

    Pros

Its part of the company culture to change jobs every 2-3 years. Also employees have the opportunity to apply for any position given they have the ability to learn and a proven track record for delivering positive results. Ex- engineers working in marketing

    Cons

Work life balance. There is none! Expected to work over time with no added benefit (PTO, bonus,..etc)
No real management training regarding do's and dont's
Information share - many employees find out about corporate changes via media

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Employees love the idea of simply being able to expand their breadth of knowledge in many different areas. This is an awesome idea, please keep this mindset.

I worked at Cummins full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Provides resources for an employee to get involved in their community. Tremendous global opportunities. Strong core corporate values. Telecommuting provided as a benefit.

    Cons

Employees become slaves to their jobs. Work-Life balance difficult to achieve with the hours that management expect / show as examples. Medical insurance SUCKS. Office culture very divided. Nashville Office was like working in a library. Noone talks verbally, it's all done via instant messaging which can really hurt one's communication skills.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Start setting better examples in the hours worked, vacations actually taken without working.

    Mediocre Fortune 500 Company

Current Employee - Senior Project Engineer

I have been working at Cummins full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

International Fortune 500 company [ie, large]. A lot of internal move opportunities to different areas of the world. If you're interested in playing office politics, you'll do well. DFSS is the bible. Depending on your division/manager, can be VERY flexible on work/life balance. (Cummins Engine Business Unit is NOT the same as Cummins Filtration is not the same as Turbo Technologies etc. Completely different cultures.) Concerned about health and well-being of employees. Community involvement is fantastic.

    Cons

International Fortune 500 company [ie, large]. Practically zero accountability. Substantial amount of 'fat' could be trimmed to really make the organization work better. Additionally, processes are atrocious, which also creates inefficiencies. DFSS is the bible; ex. even though the outcome of a project is completely counter-intuitive / doesn't work for the functional group it supports (typically because that group's voice isn't heard), projects are approved. Salary is NOT competitive, no matter what HR/leadership says and they use "salary grades" as smoke and mirrors. If you do your job well and meet/exceed expectations, unless you're spending time on their internal "career connections" website looking for the next position, you will not move throughout the company. Concerned about health and well-being of employees as long as it doesn't cost money. EXTREMELY conservative.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Independent of the comments above, there is a HUGE disjoint between upper management and the way that "the workers" use systems and processes to get work done. Typically zero interest exists by said management to understand the trails/tribulations/roadblocks of mid-management and the workers. If understanding were to occur, Cummins Inc could be at the TOP of the Fortune 500 list, instead of 168th.

    - Reluctance in trusting talented new hires

I have been working at Cummins full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Cummins is a great company to learn and grow within Supply Chain. You'll work hard with very little training which forces you to embrace change and adapt to a truly global environment.

    Cons

Promotional opportunities are tough! If you're looking to do a great job and be able to change roles, this isn't the company for you. The only way to truly be promoted is through favoritism.

Also, you'll be grossly underpaid compared to industry standards. Lastly, healthcare sucks. You will pay for everything out of pocket.
