I worked at Custom Decorators full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Excellent training, management, and growth opportunities. Excellent company to work for.

    Cons

The company was slow to react to the recession and did not adjust their promotion philosophy and hiring practices accordingly. The store was over-weighted with decorators who had to share an ever-diminishing pool of customers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It is better too prepare in advance for increasing signs of a slowdown in the economy rather than to ignore those signs, only to react after the damage has been done.

I have been working at Custom Decorators

    Pros

Laid back environment and flexible work schedule

    Cons

Was told during interview that there would be growth opportunities, two years in and still nothing. Disappointed

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Do succession planning and promote from within, cross train and provide professional development.

    Pros

Great products, lots of independants, lots of leads

    Cons

Disconnect from management, go to be more focused on profits than the huge value of long term dedicated designers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    A little to late........

I have been working at Custom Decorators full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Management is pretty flexible. If you need to take a day off, like if your child is sick, they will generally let you use PTO, or make up a day that week. They don't ride you for being late if it doesn't happen often, they just like to know if it is more than a few minutes. The dress code is pretty lax.

    Cons

There is a lot of work to be done, and not enough people to do it. So, you'll be stretched as much as possible. You might even be tasked to do work you weren't originally expected to. Also, the pay is on the low side.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please hire the number of people needed to best take care of the clients and our decorators. They deserve better customer service.

I worked at Custom Decorators full-time

    Pros

Good people, tools, front line managers. High level of commitment towards shared goals by those working closest to the customers. Experience gained should help one be successful in other ventures.

    Cons

Minimal opportunities to build a long term career. Compensation and PTO are on low side of average. Culture is not cohesive and varies from department to department. Morale has taken a big hit recently

I have been working at Custom Decorators full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The company has a relatively good benefits program. The work environment is casual and open conversations with management are welcomed. Management is very flexible on scheduling. The company provides great training opportunities and has provide a large degree of career enhancing duties.

    Cons

The PTO is a little on the light side, but better than some I have had. The office space could use an update, but is still workable.

I have been working at Custom Decorators part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Hunter Douglas Product.......best in window coverings
Money to be made with qualified leads......
Discounts on Hunter Douglas Sample Books.......

    Cons

Favoritism among Sales Consultants.......good leads only going to certain individuals....
You can only make money with good leads......these are given to you by your Regional
    Sales Manager.......
Leads are pre-qualified by employees at Home Depot, Macy's, etc. The customers have never heard of Hunter Douglas, let alone can not afford this product.
Spending up to 2 hours on a house call, price comparing, all for $8.00.
Must, and I say Must attend all webinars or you will be taken off rotation in stores you are
assigned to. This is your punishment......No Leads......

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop the Favoritism......give everyone a chance........explain when hiring your Design Consultants all the extra work involved, such as, Product Knowledge meetings in all your
stores, visiting all your stores weekly, hours and hours of paperwork and please dont tell your Design Consultant after you sell the job you are no longer involved with this client. Should there be any problem with product or installation you are the first person they call and complain to. Last but not least their installers are very unprofessional, always late for appointments and sometimes very rude to your clients....

    Pros

The people were very nice and extremely helpful.

    Cons

There was more to be completed yet not enough help to get it all done.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

In my opinion there is a great need of hiring at least one more person in Accounts Receivable.
