I have been working at Cyan full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Chance to work with the latest technologies with a smart, dedicated team. Though a public company, still has the feeling of a startup. Management has been very successful in their previous companies.

    Cons

Beautiful location but far from the South Bay. Trying to compete with much bigger companies with much bigger budgets.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't bet the company on a few big customers. Bring in a more formal (but agile) development process.

    Pros

Engineering culture that is open and inclusive that values technical excellence and an open collaborative environment. Cutting-edge company who are leaders in their field, generating an atmosphere of excitement and possibility.

    Cons

Software-development process leaves something to be desired. Poor focus on requirements-gathering and agile methodology.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consider adopting agile development in a big way. This is often seen as a burden on engineering, but the truth is that as an engineer who has worked in shops with very strong agile methodology, the process protects the engineer as much as the customer and the company. Use Jira's greenhopper capabilities for planning and do every-two-week sprints.

    Pros

You get to work on the very latest stuff in software and hardware. Even with 140 engg's the co's culture is very agile with very quick adoption of new technologies relevant to our work. The company is very opensource friendly and constantly contributes (in code and 'kind') to various opensource projects. Very good work culture and you can literally choose your work style, from relaxed to extremely aggressive like in a small startup.

    Cons

Office space is a little boring with tight cubicles! Sometimes there's lack of clarity and communication at the upper echelons of management (which is not very high as we've mostly a flat hierarchy).

I worked at Cyan full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Typical tech company. Nice workspace, fun activities, good people. I was given opportunities to work on different projects, which was a great way to learn different aspects of the business.

    Cons

On the flip side of that, I was not given an opportunity to work in my domain as I didn't have the work experience.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Better coffee. Cultivate talent from within.

    Pros

Beer on Fridays in summer(Nothing this year though)
    Decent Projects to work on.
Some folks are really smart and work really hard(but those are less and company depends on them)
They have the potential ; they just need to make good things happen fast

    Cons

-When you see a five star rosy review, you secretly know the kind of company we are ;-)
    -Fast going out of cash.
-Low pay and even lower pay raise at the end of year that doesn't even cover inflation
-HR sucks big time. They are rude and un resourceful
-The HQ location is the graveyard of old/dead telecom companies(lol wine country and beauty what not)
-A good section of Engineering Workforce is old and grumpy

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You know you are awesome already and there is no room for improvement. Great job guys ... Cheering and Clapping follows. To the future \m/

    Pros

Highly intelligent crew and technical leaders. Projects are exciting and the company is going somewhere. It isn't just meeting the status quo. You don't need to be a perfect match to work here. This company gets it with software engineers. If you're good it doesn't matter if you don't know a specific language. They give you the opportunity to learn, and also move between projects where you would be most useful or interested in. The company also has direction, products that are ahead or better than larger companies, so this could potentially be a great success story.

    Cons

Why are the cons the HQ location? Being in one of the most beautiful areas of California is a con? Ok then.

We get leadership where it counts and from where it counts but CEO is not often in the picture. Need a strong advocate with energy and excitement about what we're doing.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep going with communicating all our plans with the employees. Keep letting everyone know where we're headed and what our plans our. This has recently been done and is a great benefit to understand the company as a whole.

    Pros

-SDN technology (but everyone is doing it).
-Great place if you are an intern.
    -nothing else

    Cons

    - Management holds employees accountable for all product lines...regardless of training.
    - Management does not look out for the best interest of its employees
    - Career advancement non-existing.
    - Pay is inadequate for the responsibilities.
    - North Bay where older people retire and drink wine.
    - Too small of a company and employees are disgruntled.
    - Co-workers are very unhelpful and are not willing to assist.
    - Stock options have declined drastically.
    - 2 weeks of product training and then you are on your own.
    - No defined job expectation for accountability.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire new management because what you have obviously isn't working.

I worked at Cyan full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

The product and colleagues. Cyan has a software with a lot of potential. and your coworkers are all pretty fantastic people.

    Cons

the management, HR, training, upward mobility, work life balance, and gender favoritism. the leadership does not want to take the time to lead. during my employment and upon my exit HR was always extremely rude and was clearly there to support the company and not the employee. without getting into details which i cannot here, I was treated differently at this company than about 80% of the rest.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It is in your best interest to put policies in place that apply to all employees and not leave decisions up to the manager when it comes to HR related topics.

The leadership of the company should not be addressing everyone as "guys" in company meetings and saying "I am from Texas, everyone is a guy". This sends a message company wide that a male favored environment is acceptable.

I worked at Cyan as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

Highly intelligent co-workers who were at the same time incredibly friendly and very helpful. Wonderful working atmosphere. Flat management style leads to great communication across departments and vertically. All management works on the same floors and environment as employees, even the president. Company has a streamlined the new hire integration process that was very effective.

    Cons

I only wish head quarters was in east/south bay.
