    I worked at Cyan full-time

    Pros

Great pay, on par with San Francisco and Silicon Valley markets. The leadership team of Mike and Mark are experienced and very honest. I felt good working for a company whose goal was to make a good product not take as much for the leadership as possible and run to the next venture.

    Cons

Dont' really have anything negative to offer.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep doing what your doing, I liked the leadership's style and direction.

    Pros

Very very honest CEO/President Mike. Highly talented team. You can learn a lot

    Cons

HQ Petaluma has very little options if ever need to explore different opportunities. Not so good stock price

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Salaries are on lower end. Need to raise the bar to keep talent

    Pros

Great place to get experience on SDN, Python, and other cool stuff. Lots of Smart people.

    Cons

Unless you are glow in the dark genius, expect to be treated as disposable. Company nearing death spiral.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay people scale. Come clean about 18% RIF in Nov 2014.

I worked at Cyan full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Excellent software product to complement an average hardware platform. Good reputation of quality and new product delivery throughout the customer base.

    Cons

If you're not part of the Cerent/Cisco core culture, then you're a second class citizen. Several years ago, the Exec Mgmt team was accessible and provided a lot of value. Prior to the IPO, new "experienced" Execs were brought in to shepherd the company through the IPO process. They lost the concept of "team" and damaged their credibility with the rank and file, when they brought in a bunch of "overstuffed" value-less Execs that added nothing to the company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Go back to your roots and focus on execution. Put Hatfield back in charge. Streamline headcount and take a hard look at everyone to see what they contribute to the bottom line. I can think of 3 or 4 VPs that if they didn't show up for work tomorrow, nobody would notice and the business wouldn't be impacted one bit.

    Pros

    good people
    nice area of Northern California
    lot's to learn

the place still has a startup mentality, which is a benefit and a curse; it makes it the atmosphere more vibrant, but ... see cons

    Cons

    below-average benefits
    below-average pay
    below-inflation raises
it's not going to get better for a while

the startup mentality here also hurts; little to no documentation - never saw a software design document - also never wrote one, who had time? everything is very ad hoc - somebody must be planning, please tell me somebody has a plan

Former Employee - Customer Service Engineer in Petaluma, CA

I worked at Cyan full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Cyan has simple-yet-effective hardware that can do the job for being optical transport box.
The software offering in SDN arena is one of the leading tools that is hard to beat on the market.
The service offered to Customer makes Customer's life a lot easier, plus the Customer support team has the diverse knowledge of nearly all products that needs support.

    Cons

The team is preferably on site, which make sense, but sometimes this is reducing efficiency in getting work done.
The coordination across group, tend to be a bit convoluted due to induced process to get things done, especially between non-engineering to engineering.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Process is good, but try to be flexible in allowing team member to help out, and direct the team member that are 'lost' with the clear and concise guide.

I have been working at Cyan full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Chance to work with the latest technologies with a smart, dedicated team. Though a public company, still has the feeling of a startup. Management has been very successful in their previous companies.

    Cons

Beautiful location but far from the South Bay. Trying to compete with much bigger companies with much bigger budgets.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't bet the company on a few big customers. Bring in a more formal (but agile) development process.

    Pros

Engineering culture that is open and inclusive that values technical excellence and an open collaborative environment. Cutting-edge company who are leaders in their field, generating an atmosphere of excitement and possibility.

    Cons

Software-development process leaves something to be desired. Poor focus on requirements-gathering and agile methodology.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consider adopting agile development in a big way. This is often seen as a burden on engineering, but the truth is that as an engineer who has worked in shops with very strong agile methodology, the process protects the engineer as much as the customer and the company. Use Jira's greenhopper capabilities for planning and do every-two-week sprints.
