    Pros

Great coworkers , the people not in management are very friendly and pleasant.

    Cons

Frequent changes in management result in overall management being uninformed and ineffective. Management and union are not in synch. Management does not demonstrate respect or appreciation for front-line supervisors.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Model the dedication that you expect from others. Show appreciation and respect towards your front line supervisors and don't ask of them what you are not willing to do yourself.

I worked at Cytec Engineered Materials full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Most of the lower managers are great to work with and understanding of circumstances and really try to work with you. The work at times can be monotonous, depending, as they're a manufacturing company.

    Cons

Upper management is more interested in profits than overall health of the company. Stagnant growth meant massive layoffs across the board and most of it unnecessary and possibly even more damaging in the long run. Union is overly strong and uses their power to promote laziness: they sandbag work until non-union employees are forced to do their work and then they claim grievance benefits for their work being "taken."

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take a closer look at long term ramifications, instead of lining your own pockets.

    Pros

The company paid decently and had good benefits. The facilities are decent for this type of industry. There are a lot of plants so there are opportunities to do different things.

    Cons

Cytec treats its people very poorly much like cattle. They over work people to the point of deciding if they want a job or their health.

    Pros

    Pay. But money isn't everything.

    Cons

This is an extremely unethical company that does not care for its employees. The only thing that matters to them are dollar signs and shareholders. They do not care about your health or well being. They do not care about those that helped them make all their millions. Employees are nothing but numbers. DO NOT WORK HERE. RUN LIKE YOUR LIFE DEPENDED ON IT.

Engineering Driven Culture managed by Inexperienced Management who can't make decisions

I have been working at Cytec Engineered Materials full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Respectful wages and benefits. Some people are helpful.

    Cons

Management either plays a blind eye or doesn't want to face the continuous problems with customer service, quality, and overall production issues at each plant level. Upper management is very incompetent with wrong people in the wrong positions. Middle Management has no flexibility and basically flows down their ineptness in not being able to make simple decisions. Cytec would rather lose a customer than take a hit on their financials. Cytec is very risk adverse and don't supply their sales force with the tools to make decisions. Salesman are powerless and only serve as puppets for all decisions made from the President all the way down to the Regional Sales Manager. Cytec constantly roles out new buzz words like "Customer Focus" to give the organization the impression that management cares. Customer are treated like dirt with little concern for professionalism. Management is only concerned about forecasting and running reports while consistently pressuring everyone at every level to justify their position. It's a back stabbing organization where you have to constantly watch your back, and your value as an employee is non-existent. Too many Engineers and Chemists at the management level who don't know how to run a sales organization. Customers are becoming more and more unhappy and eventually this is going to bite Cytec down the road if it hasn't already.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management needs to leave their "Ivory Tower" and actually pay attention to what is going on at the plant level. There is so much ineptness and just overall bureaucracy on making the most simple decisions for fear of backlash from upper management. You're losing a lot of good employees who no longer feel they or their work is valued. The organization needs to simplified in how decisions are made, and empowering middle management to make those decisions rather than waiting on you to make them. Invest more money in hiring more customer service reps, rather than continuously increasing the workload on existing employees, thus sacrificing their ability to respond to the customer. Customers are not being called back, quotations are delayed for as long as 30 days sometimes longer, and eliminating the need to constantly have to schedule a conference call to make a simple decision. Otherwise, Cytec will continue to drive customers away and you will never have quality employees because you can't keep them.

I worked at Cytec Engineered Materials

    Pros

Good benefits, salary, vacation. Treated their employees pretty well for the most part. Spent money on things that were necessary to do your job.

    Cons

Strange structures in place for obtaining project money (extremely inefficient and time consuming), good ole boy system very strong, no training budget, no good path for advancement, set up for stability at the price of flexibility.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The good ole boy system is outdated....suggest you move half of your managers from Jersey down to some of the plants so you can see what's going on. Get them in the manufacturing environment, where they will see plenty of opportunities for improvement.

I have been working at Cytec Engineered Materials (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Competitive compensation and benefits and they make a product that helps reduce energy consumption. Employees lower in the organization are nice

    Cons

Management is very arrogant, controlling and shows no loyalty to employees. There is very little straight talk, leaders work in silos and trust is almost nonexistent.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Learn how to be leaders instead of managers. Trust has to be earned and you can't just ignore the elephant in the middle of the room.
