Pros
Good benefits and good people although upper management can be a bit volatile.
Cons
Far better than the average builder but losing the entrepreneurial spirit that made it so successful. Being overrun by corporate mandates and policies instead of relying on having the right people in the right positions to make good decisions.
Advice to Senior Management
Take care of the best talent in the company, not just the best drinking buddies to senior management.
Pros
Excelent pay and benefits. Constantly changing work environment, new challenges every day
Cons
Super high stress. time deadlines and constraints sometimes unreasonable.
Advice to Senior Management
one person doing job of 4 or 5
Pros
Horton sells homes in all major areas in the surrounding areas of Houston. Good floorplans and homes are well built.
Cons
Horton is known for major shakeups every few years. Division President and Vice President as well as several heads of departments were let go as well as changing commission structure and days off allowed (down to one a week).
Advice to Senior Management
Treat employees with more respect - not just lip service from Corporate Manager. Find ways to improve morale, not ridicule people.
Pros
Great Benefits at times can be a very fun company to work for great potential to make a very good income.
Cons
Micro Managed to death rules will change at the drop of a hat with no warning. constant turnover with sales mangers and middle management.
Advice to Senior Management
Upper Management runs the show should listen to middle managers more always seemed like everyone was too afraid to speak the truth around the company in fear of getting fired.
Pros
Good benefits; stock purchase plan
Cons
Upper level management is not proactive in recognizing what is going on at the lower managment levels. High tolerance for "offenses" in lower management levels without HR discipline. Corporate climate is not a "team" atmosphere. Employee HR complaints go unaddressed at the corporate level.
Advice to Senior Management
Be more active at the local level to remedy issues present there.
Pros
Good pay. Bonuses are good when economy is good.
Cons
Who you are sleeping with can help save your job. Typical corporate America. The fat should be trimmed at the top but it starts at the bottom during hard times.
Advice to Senior Management
Retain employees that work hard and deserve a job.
Pros
Fairly well compensated for what was otherwise a pretty easy job. 8-5 workdays. Standard benefits.
Cons
Executive management makes stupid and un-iformed decisions. There are no rewards/ incentives for working hard. However, if you suck up to the right people you might go somewhere.
Advice to Senior Management
Be more open to employees ideas. Reward those who work hard.
Pros
National builder, national exposure. Good pay. Money to compete with the competition, and not afraid no make the hard decisions.
Cons
National company, a lot falls through the cracks. Because of its size decisions have to made at a Regional standpoint; so some talent can be lost when changes are made. Not always in the best interest of the employee.
Advice to Senior Management
Very difficult as the economy has caused a cut in back office support, and advancement oppurtunities. However, if your talented at what you do make sure everyone is aware.
Pros
Fiancially solid, strong business modle. I was present during an acquisition and strong growth then the recent decline. All initial statements regarding allowing divisional management to run the business were kept.
Cons
Wall Street driven decisions are not always in the best interest of the customer or employee. Becasue of the size of the organization some communications were not always as solid as they could have been.
Advice to Senior Management
Be more present in the bad times than in the good times.
Pros
The company has Great benefits, Good Salary, Great homes.
Cons
Too much nepotism. The real estate market has affected the company but it's hanging in.
Advice to Senior Management
Show more professionalism and less nepotism. Partying and talking about it in the meetings is uncalled for and tends to point out how others get good communities and opportunities. For those of us who don't go out for drinks with the VP of Sales, it shows.
