I have been working at DATATRAK International full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

required work week is 5 days

    Cons

The CEO is completely detached and I would be shocked if he knew anything about our services and/or product functionality. Every department in the company (literally) is overworked and underpaid. The "senior managers" have absolutely no idea how the pharma industry functions, nor how to manage a team. Trial designers are angry, overloaded, and semi-challenged in terms of communication. The QA department officially consists on one man who will respond to your email in 6 months (if you're lucky) and one new hire who's already in over her head. The turnover rate of project managers is self explanatory. The company's internal processes are beyond ancient and extremely time consuming.
If you think you have support, think again. Everyone is beyond overworked and those in charge refuse to acknowledge it. They pray for naiveté, insecure, and desperate employees because those are the only ones that would consider staying longer than 6 months.
My intentions for this review are to help anyone considering a career here. there's much more to say, but unfortunately, there's so little time ;)

    to be continued.....

Not the best to work for; deceiving tactics and heavy workloads result in low employee retention.

    Pros

Exposure to interesting technology, they spared little expense in developing their product. The exposure to the technology made the job worthwhile.

    Cons

The senior management made terrible decisions including the purchase of Clickfind. This ultimately led to much of the company being let go. Senior management is very non-technical, and unable to make informed decisions in that regard. Those responsible ran the company into the ground.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You should have left much sooner than you did. Your stockholders have been screaming for your heads for years.

    Pros

Pretty good benefits and work/life balance.
Mostly business casual environment (no suits needed).
The people at DATATRAK were great.
Excellent opportunity to work with a multi-national company, although the Bonn office is now history.
It was nice to work with clients in the Pharma industry - lots of exposure to IT, clinical, research arenas.

    Cons

Very difficult to move up in this company - it is relatively small to begin with.
Management structure really messed up - too many chiefs and not enough Indians.
Very top-heavy in both management and administration.
Those who seemed to do most of the work (trial designers) were low man on the totem pole, while the managers and Project managers seemed to be put on pedestals, although the PMs eventually were called to task as well.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop focusing on management, let people do what they do best, listen to their ideas.
Respect the customer more than you do - it became clear that clients sensed a negative tone.

Wait for the company to sink or swim before joining the team

    Pros

Management is keen on hiring people with potential for growth and little demonstrated experience. This allows you to gain access to the Clinical Research industry in an IT company, without needing extensive background experience. Call center, project management, and technical business analysts (called Trial Designers), will have the opportunity to have significant interactions with external customers. Developers and technical services will work within a top-notch management structure that is challenging, rewarding, and communicates well. Sales is largely unsupervised and can pursue contracts as they see fit, but they only get commissions on new business, not repeat business. Auditing and accounting staff will be oddly empowered here.

    Cons

This company is on the brink of going out of business. The CEO is actively courting a takeover, at which point job security for the majority of the company will evaporate. Few other organizations can compete with Datatrak for the ratio of management and administrative overhead to contributing workers. There are about 75 employees presently, with around 25 people in management or administration (accounting, finance, legal, etc.). There is a plague in the sales team, where 5+ sales reps are hired annually, and 4 leave. Pay varies widely by geography and raises are few and far between, so negotiate hard for a good salary. Project managers must go through a grossly inefficient process of billing against contracts, which breeds frustration nearly one week a month.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Fight! There is no reason to give up competing and seek a buyout as the only way to make money. Partner with other companies to resell and deliver the product. Stop spending so much money on overhead with QA + internal auditing, project managers performing billing and accounting reworking the billing, development & PM & business analyst restricted access + call center restricted access. Really, it's overkill. Change the way you sell, cut the overhead costs instead of the people who generate revenue, and reward the employees that customers compliment.
