I worked at DC Department of Health (Less than a year)

    Pros

You build a supportive system with most employees who depend on each other. Employees from other agencies are willing to help and teach you.

    Cons

Poor management with no interest in helping employee grow or advance. Managers are often jealous of the educational achievements of their staff and managers will not deal with conflict but ignore the issue until the issues explode. No transparency and very poor treatment of good employees. Management brings in young, unskilled managers and ignored more competent staff its totally political and who you know. DOH spends too much money on contract workers because they hire their own friends and relatives. No advancement at all.

    Advice to Management

Learn how to invest in your workers instead of ignoring their issues. Stop hiding from the issues and address trouble workers to destroy morale and reward those who are doing their job. Stop hiring so many contractors and train current staff to meet your expectations.

    Pros

Fun people. Good place for people interested in public health.

    Cons

Agency heads hardly ever give raises, and when they do, it's to people they like. Very incestuous. Lots of work and no reward financially. Lots of lazy people who get paid well but who aren't qualified to do the job and do little to no work. Agency is too top heavy.

    Pros

Benefits Human resources department staff are professional and courteous Metro accessible location is the best benefit - subway is right across the street

    Cons

Some of the senior administration don't have college degrees Staff problems arn't addressed without there being drama or incident Good staff members are not appreciated as much as the less productive staff members

    Advice to Management

Yearly or bi-annual staff performance review is highly needed. Some staff have been there so long they have lost all empathy toward the addicts
