I have been working at DEA full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Great Mission. Core Employees are generally outstanding people fighting the good fight. International travel is an option for all who work and want to go overseas. You make a difference in the lives of our citizens.

    Cons

Public sentiment is often affected by inaccurate information put in the press by pro-legalization movement and anti-government elements. Rules and paperwork hinder effectiveness. Finally, you don't join this job for the pay.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Cut paperwork demands. Take the fight to the American public, they will respond. No one wants a nation of drug addled zombies. No one wants their kids taking dope.

I worked at DEA full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Not a bad place to work. Has plenty of room for advancement.

    Cons

I was contracted with a company called HIDTA to DEA. I worked with them for three years. They were constantly hiring, but only internally. I want to get in with them so I could transfer, but they would never hire outside of DEA even though I worked there and knew all of the task. I also had a few issues with some of the agents think I was beneath them. Power stuggle.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take better care of your contractors and allow easier hiring.

I worked at DEA full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

The offer a good salary and benefits.

    Cons

It is a male, law enforcement dominated entity. They only take care of their agents and forget about the rest.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You don't know how to manage people, you are simple administrators.

I worked at DEA full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

A very dedicated staff of people committed to combating organize crime and international drug trafficking.

    Cons

Major challenge: if you are not a Special Agent, your career aspirations may be limited. The only folks that make it into the Senior Executive Service ranks are the Agents, literally one or two Intelligence analysts and no Diversion Investigators.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give the other CORE series (132s and 1810s) a true opportunity to run their respective divisions.

I have been working at DEA full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Good pay and benefits but no other incentives.

    Cons

If you are willing to become a puppet of this agency and cover up for corruption within our own government, corruption worldwide, bigotry, harassment, and so called Special Agents who cheat on their wives left and right...then, this is the right agency for you.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management is the first violator so no advice for them. They get away with everything...they create a hostile environment, bad mouth everybody, promote idiots within the agency, and work to death those who take care of business. This is not the place for honest, good-hearted people.

I have been working at DEA full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Most of the people of work for DEA are great to work with. Very few politics and they are mission minded, family-friendly and act like a family.

There are many opportunities for advancement and many locations to work from. Smaller agency, but has a big footprint.

    Cons

Unless you are a Special Agent, there are some career-limiting fields and most of the senior level ranks are filled by Special Agents versus civilian employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The next generation of workers aren't always focused on the mission. To keep the best and brightest, a career path needs to be developed for non-agents and agents alike.

    Cons

Micro-management, lack of inter-group teamwork, very bureaucratic

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Micro-management styles went out in the late 80's....
