An agency plagued with low morale and terrible values...bad to the bone people.

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsGood pay and benefits but no other incentives.

ConsIf you are willing to become a puppet of this agency and cover up for corruption within our own government, corruption worldwide, bigotry, harassment, and so called Special Agents who cheat on their wives left and right...then, this is the right agency for you.

Advice to Senior ManagementManagement is the first violator so no advice for them. They get away with everything...they create a hostile environment, bad mouth everybody, promote idiots within the agency, and work to death those who take care of business. This is not the place for honest, good-hearted people.

    Great people and mission

Chief of Public Affairs (Current Employee)
    Arlington, VA

ProsMost of the people of work for DEA are great to work with. Very few politics and they are mission minded, family-friendly and act like a family.

There are many opportunities for advancement and many locations to work from. Smaller agency, but has a big footprint.

ConsUnless you are a Special Agent, there are some career-limiting fields and most of the senior level ranks are filled by Special Agents versus civilian employees.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe next generation of workers aren't always focused on the mission. To keep the best and brightest, a career path needs to be developed for non-agents and agents alike.

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsGood learning experiences, varied technology has been good, some freedom to try new things

ConsMicro-management, lack of inter-group teamwork, very bureaucratic

Advice to Senior ManagementMicro-management styles went out in the late 80's....

Government work is stable but not for everyone

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    Louisville, KY

ProsGreat salary plus yearly increases, good people to work with, good benefits and time off, government holidays off, and relaxed work environment.

ConsNot much upward mobility you have to apply to other positions there is not much promotion potential, everything is slow and unorganized at times, have to deal with incompetent people a lot

Advice to Senior ManagementCan't really advise management to do anything because everything is controlled by the government and they do not change things... trust me, it's best just to keep your mouth shut.

There are better places to work in 2009 as a Special Agent. DEA is not what it used to be.

GS-14-1811/Special Agent Group Supervisor (Current Employee)
    Washington, DC

    ProsPay and benefits are good.

ConsManagers are morons and have zero respect for employees. DEA has no concept of family oriented career growth, and salary is capped at GS-13 (effectively) unless you want to promote to GS-14, which requires a mandatory HQ tour of 2 to 3 years and then a mandatory rotation OUT of HQ, two moves. Since the HQ tour begins at Year-4 after initial promotion to GS-14, you are facing two mandatory moves in a 6 to seven year time span. This wreaks havoc on family and finances.

Advice to Senior ManagementGo to a leadership school taught by the military or a successful fortune 500 company. "Motivation" does not mean threaten employees with poor evals. Regardless of how high you promote, there exists a greater number of poor leaders than good leaders in DEA. "Engage" in DEA management circles means 1) First, take leave 2) Make sure you delegate the solution to someone else and 3) when they don't fix it, blame them and take credit for assigning blame.

Can't believe they paid me to do that!

    Assistant Regional Director (Former Employee)
    Bogotá, Bogota (Colombia)

ProsGreat place to work. Sense of camaraderie and mission. To most agents and analysts, it was a vocation, aside from a job.

ConsNot very many. There are a few people who want to just try to get by, and they stick out.

Advice to Senior ManagementManagers should be leaders first, and so judged and promoted. Priority #1 for advancement should be enforcement competence.
