Not a ton of challenging work to be had in the government

No room for growth. Military Pay Offices seem to have it the worst

I have been working at DFAS full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Since finance is viewed as a needed occupation, it was one of the least hit areas when it came to furloughs and other government shutdowns. It's a way to get foot in the door to civil service You know that you'll have a job, if you can get through the cons.

    Cons

When it comes to Military Pay offices located at the Army posts, they seem to have it the worst. Speaking with almost all other employees that worked under DFAS(Army Military Pay) the process and the supervisors are the WORST. DFAS headquarters seem to let their directors get away with murder. The directors frequently berate their military pay technicians and military pay supervisors to get the job done. Turnover is high here and not because it's a military post. There are no incentives and hard work is not rewarded by those who do it. Just like with some organizations, brown nosing and kiss ups get rewarded even if their work is sub-par. Senior management also has snitches employed on the floor. People who will gather information and go and report to senior leaders. Fort Leonard Wood Military Pay office is the worst. Double Standards, mistreatment of employees, and low morale are what you have to look forward to if you work in this organization

I worked at DFAS full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Opportunity to do important work for our country and those who serve it. Flexible hours, liberal telemarketing. Pay isn't great, but the benefits, i.e. health insurance, liberal leave, and good retirement plan are excellent.

    Cons

Very little effort is made by management to distinguish between mediocre and very good performers. Promotions are very limited, and merit, productivity, and performance don't matter at all. Advancement is based solely on education, youth, and knowing the right people. All other tangible performance incentives such as bonuses, cash awards, and time off awards, are virtually non-existent.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take the time and make the effort to find out which of your employees are actually getting the job done. Then make an effort to provide them with some incentive to stick around.

I have been working at DFAS

    Pros

DFAS is a good place to work in terms of schedules and decent benefits.

    Cons

There is no room for advancement unless you have recently graduated from college or you have been there for 25 years. If you are over the age of 25 then forget about job advancement or you have to be there for over 25 years. The harder you work the more work that you get but none of the recognition.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Promote people that have good ideas, knowledge, and experience.
