Industry Leader - Large is Good & Bad

I worked at DH Pace full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Great training opportunities, intelligent, hard-working associates, CEO with strong vision. Decent pay and increases, depending on economy/performance. Multiple locations. High visibility in the industry.

    Cons

Company can be somewhat rigid and more reactive then proactive. Company is diversified in many areas of the building materials trade, but balance is heavily effected by construction cycle. As a distributor model, the company has to rely heavily upon it's manufacturers for success (disclosure: this is true for any distributor model). Micro-managed, to some degree.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue to be open to new ideas. Incorporate a fast-track area for all areas of the business. Have more manager employee forums for open discussion on ways to improve communication and processes.

I worked at DH Pace full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Most of the people in National Accts. are top notch, with a good work ethic. Meteoric growth in past 4 years in this sales oriented company. Wages are good to very good.

    Cons

Fragmented corporate structure allows for excessive friction between business units. Extremely weak operationally, with excessive waste of time & resources absorbed into the 'law of large numbers'. Middle management in National Accts. is very weak. Upper management is more concerned with the next large project than managing their team. Benefits are poor & expensive.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Learn to value industry experience. Listen to the people who are actually doing the work. Put in place a defined path for advancement into middle management.

I worked at DH Pace full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

There are some great people who work there and I am sure that there are some good managers.

    Cons

The area I was in, one employee who was not a manager was allowed to ride rough shod over everyone - worse than a drill sergeant and management applauded attitude. Also company does not have matching 401K program.

I worked at DH Pace full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Top management is really good and I always fully trusted. Some really great employees. They found a definite need and business is growing faster than they can handle.

    Cons

Top management doesn't know what is going on. Middle management is awful and seems to be picked by who is friends and not earned. No path for opportunity. Training is none existent which makes it hard when people are promoted to positions they have no experience in.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Train your people!!! Clean house in middle management. They are untrusting and terrible.

I have been working at DH Pace full-time

    Pros

I really cant think of a lot of Pro's for this company. They let you off if it is an emergency and some managers understand the work life balance more than others. They have a wonderful new facility in Olathe that is pretty state of the art.

    Cons

Benefits are horrible and very pricey. The compensation is low compared to other positions at other companies. Management is close minded and tough to deal with sometimes.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Allow your people to be themselves and not micro manage them. You have really good people that work for you but you are quickly loosing people because of your close minded management style.

    Pros

it was close to home before the moved to Olathe.

    Cons

too much high school clicks going on in the work place, if you are a good looking woman working there you will get talked about behind your back. Work loads are ridiculous and not enough raises, they keep giving a lot more work with no more pay. Not enough back up for positions for vacations, out sick etc... No Christmas bonuses, only a dinner in January that only certain people were recognized for their work when the office people do all of the real work. No recognition when doing a good job only negative when something goes wrong.

I have been working at DH Pace full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Excellent pay. And a very welcoming introduction to the company. This company is very driven for success.

    Cons

No time off for the first year, no 401k, no profit share, mediocre health insurance, and no stock options. I have no idea how anyone is to retire from this place. I was leery about taking the position because they didn't have any written job description. This is essentially an in-bound call center for service brokering. And they make a killing at it. Lots of volume and quite possibly the worst computer systems I have ever seen. They also are moving way out from where they were, and neglected to tell me that they were even contemplating it. Would have added an 30 minutes to most of their workforce.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Buck up on some benefits. Be real with people in the interview process.

    Pros

Good pay - they are always busy and run a huge crew

    Cons

Micro-management - everyone wants to know where you are at . GPS on vehicles - lack of loyalty from management. Cut throat environment and very tightly run. Can be a clickish place to work. Owners are very strange and tight with their money.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Ease up and let your employees do their job -
