Pros
I enjoy working at DHL it has allowed my to travel and meet new people. DHL is not shy about sending employees to different parts of the world for meetings and training.
Cons
Long hours during peak season October through early January. With the economic slowdown it seems that there is less and less growth opportunities.
Advice to Senior Management
Leadership is solid from and information technology stand point. This issue have often been with the BIT and operations personal.
Pros
Great people, supportive atmosphere, good working environment. Strong local management.
Cons
Poor executive leadership. The U.S. is a revolving door for global managers climing the career ladder. Little commitment since they know they will be on the bigger and better things later. They rush projects without through evaluation, which usually ends in disaster.
Advice to Senior Management
Slow down and communicate to employees more clearly.
Pros
Initially when thought DHL would succeed in the US there was high moral within the company. There are many nice and competent persons at DHL.
Cons
When it was obvious that DHL could not compete management didn't share the information sufficiently and many of us were blindsided with prompt layoffs. Many persons in Senior management were not competent and held the positions anyway. They mistreated their subordinates after using them to receive acknowledgment and did away with them when they were no longer an asset and more of a threat when it became obvious to their senior manager who really knew what was going on.
Advice to Senior Management
not applicable since the company will be leaving the US market in a few months
Pros
Above-average compensation, and the fact that your job description is so incredibly fluid that you can make it what you want to make it. If you're ambitious, you have a crack at having a major positive impact
Cons
Your job description (and the entire organization) is so incredibly fluid that it allows many to slip under the radar and never do an honest day's work to save their lives.
Advice to Senior Management
John Mullen (may peace be upon him) is an absolute freaking idiot that was richly rewarded for his knuckleheaded ways. As CEO of US Express, he presided over the expansion of DHL Domestic. What was the brilliant strategy? to compete against the USPS, UPS and FedEx by matching every service level, to every zip code. Um, so instead of finding a niche, we matched the competition's offerings in a saturated, mature market, and sold on price.
Grasping at straws, he unveiled a marketing campaign to 'put customer service back in shipping'. In reality, you don't need to talk to customer service unless your package gets lost, and we were losing a lot of packages. So we made the call center friendlier.
Five years and $10 billion later, running annual losses of $1.3 billion, Deutsche Post pulled the plug. At DHL US Express, every year was a bonus year, including 2009. If you think AIG was shameless, DHL is right up there!
So after Mullen drove the US into the ground, he was promoted to CEO of Global Express. Yeah! Well done, John! Now he retired because of 'personal reasons'.
John, don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out, you weasel.
Pros
DHL Express did pay decent salaries as compared to similiar companies in the metro area.
Cons
Working there was stressful. They merged employees from different companies(Airborne, Danzas, DHL) but different company cultures didn't mesh well. The end result was more like a quilt than a melting pot. Also I was worried the whold time just how long would I have a job. Looking at their business model, I just couldn't see how they would ever become profitable in the US Market. Unfortunately in time it turned out my instincts were right. I count myself as one of the lucky ones who left before the job market soured.
Advice to Senior Management
Make sure that communication getst transmitted and understood at all levels of the organization.
Pros
DHL is a global company with a lot of opportunities in various countries. While it is true that they are closing within the United States, the global part of the company is very profitable. The salaries were above industry average and work life balance was very strong. In regards to the benefit structure, DHL is generous with medicle, vision, dental, vacation policy and the pension plan is great. DHL Logistics and Global Forwarding are staying open within the United States so DHL will still be around and Duetsch Post's Global Mail also has operations here. I think that DHL may have been poorly run in the U.S. but as a Global Corporation is an outstanding employer.
Cons
The management in the United States has to be seperated into the proper areas. There was U.S. Express, Global Business Servies, Global Forwarding and Logistics. Global Business Servies were run locally but managed out of Europe and the U.S. Management lacked communication skills but the European Management is a very efficient team. The U.S. Management became caught up in what most large American Corporations do which was to cover their tracks instead of fostering creativity and out of the box thinking. When Management is so overpaid as they are, some focus gets lost on making sure the core competencies remain intact. The Directors and V.P's are incompetent because America fosters bad management. This is a national issue not a DHL one.
Advice to Senior Management
Remember that your job is to ship packages so make sure the customer is happy and not senior management
Pros
Nothing good to say. They ran Airborne Express out of business within 4 short years. Airborne was around for nearly 50 years with no German interference.
Cons
This ship has sailed, only supervisors were kept as drivers.
Advice to Senior Management
You guys should have stopped lying and given out good info about what was happening. Some of us could have had jobs lined up to go to, but instead, we are out of work in the worst reccession I have lived through. I was strung along saying that I would still have a job....
Pros
Pay is above average, there are a number of opportunities for global projects and global visibility.
Cons
The US Express business management has been absolutely terrible for the past 5 years. They have wasted Billions of dollars and in the end are walking away from business in the US.
Advice to Senior Management
John Mullen and his team have taken a multi-billion dollar enterprise and in 5 years have screwed it up so bad that all DPWN could do is shut it down and walk away! Bloomberg news, this week, reports that DPWN is replacing John Mullen. It's too late for any advice and they wouldn't listen even if it were not too late.
Pros
great group of people and fairly good benefits. Most managers are good about being flexible with schedules.
Cons
Lack of training and opportunities for advancement. Policies differ too much between different groups. No employee development or career paths
Advice to Senior Management
improve communication between departments and groups. Offer more training opportunities and offer it to everyone.
Pros
Experience working for a company that is Global. Working with people in two different continents, varied cultures was a good experience.
Cons
Uncertainity of DHL being around - from the moment I joined DHL was starting to spiral down fast, but the management kept making changes - NDA after NDA - lots of secrecy around programs that were finally shared with all.
Advice to Senior Management
Share information with rather than keep secrets changing the company as a whole impacting 1000's of lives.
