DHL IT Analyst in Scottsdale, AZ:   (Current Employee)

Pros

DHL makes use of new technologies. They provide a good salary and benefits. The facility in Scottsdale is nice.

Cons

Management is out of touch with the business and the employees. They are still trying to figure out how to run an IT shop. Running IT as a business does not work.

Advice to Senior Management

Bring IT back in and stop trying to run it as a business.

DHL Anonymous:   (Past Employee - 2008)

Pros

Looks ok on your CV
A number of internal-external training courses to be taken after joining
Once you start performing, there is job security
Its easy to move horizontally on the organization chart
The people are good to work with

Cons

After you finish "the list" of training courses required for your job, you have to push hard for further training
You will develop till you start performing well in your job, and then their is not much to gain afterward
No clear career path (Vertically)
Management change positions more often than other companies and your past victories could be forgotten with the old Mgt team.
Salaries not equal for staff on the same grade (Big differences in some cases)

Advice to Senior Management

DHL is a large organization and the way its intended to be managed is not the same as whats actually on the ground (in some regions).
More attention should be given to recruit high calibers and provide them with the development, career paths and salaries that retain them.

DHL MBA Intern in Bonn (Germany):   (Current Employee)

Pros

The job can be very rewarding and offers opportunity not only to learn but to open a door for a future career

Cons

The company is giant and far from being well integrated yet, at least for employees to understand. Despite numerous opportunity within the group, the German mentality is somehow not very well adapted to the other branches of the company.

Advice to Senior Management

Keep on working on integrating all branches on a more effective way and ensure that the company is viewed as a true international one

DHL Network Engineer:   (Current Employee)

Be Smarter

Pros

Lots of opportunies for individual achievement as long as you don't need anyone to notice

Cons

No expense spared, the more rediculous the spending the better

Advice to Senior Management

DHL can thrive as a niche player in international shipping in the US. Know your place and act accordingly.

DHL Systems Engineer in Scottsdale, AZ:   (Past Employee - 2009)

Pros

Getting involved with the latest technology.

Cons

Upper management makes lots of bad choices. Getting a promotion requires lots of @$$ kissing. They promote people that are under qualified. Depending on who your boss is, it may not be that bad to work at DHL.

Advice to Senior Management

Please consult with your engineers before making a business decision. There are ways to cut corners without impacting service.

DHL Programmer in Scottsdale, AZ:   (Current Employee)

Pros

Pay is reasonable, benefits acceptable, immediate upper management tries, but doesn’t have the authority to change things

Cons

Over worked, for no overtime pay or recognition, except from some local lower management

Advice to Senior Management

Do not try to replace good ‘street smart’ people with twice as many naïve ‘book smart’ that will not work overtime and do not understand the criticality of problems. They also work ‘office hours’. Remember, just because the world economy is down, try to keep the good people who care, because when the economy starts up again, FedEx & UPS will have their people & will gobble up DHL’s business in Europe.
Also, Since replacing the original upper management at Scottsdale, the local upper management has never tried or cared to meet the common folk. You need a good balance, not just book smart.

DHL Project Manager in Scottsdale, AZ:   (Past Employee - 2009)

Pros

Dedicated, long-term employees who still come to work every day and do their best, even without sound direction or support from above. The benefits have been fair, as are the severance packages.

Cons

Constant changes in direction. Penny-wise, pound-foolish financial decisions. Bonus driven Sr. Managers. Incomprehensible and ever-changing IT strategy. The dysfunction starts at the Corporate level in Bonn, with one poorly conceived and implemented program after another introduced almost end to end since the purchase of DHL and Airborne by DPWN, with few signs of learning from mistakes of the past.

Advice to Senior Management

It's over. Turn off the lights and treat people with respect on the way out.

DHL Analyst in Scottsdale, AZ:   (Past Employee - 2008)

Pros

Team Spirit amongst small groups. Everyones wants to succeed

Cons

Each group works like they are working against the other. Everyone wants to succeed but want the glory for thier own team.

Advice to Senior Management

go back to school and learn some basic business principles. the overall gaol of the organization is not clear to end employees.

DHL Sub-Domain Leader in Scottsdale, AZ:   (Past Employee - 2008)

1 of 1 people found this helpful

Pros

There is nothing good to say.

Cons

Senior Management doesn't have a clue. They only want "yes" people to tell them everything is great. If you say there are ways to improve things, you are not a team player because you think there is something wrong.

Advice to Senior Management

1. Learn some leadership skills - like how to define and communicate a vision, to start.

DHL Analyst in Plantation, FL:   (Current Employee)

Pros

It is a global company that will give you a good start in the business.

Cons

Absolute incompetence and complacency. Benefits are terrible even though HR keeps stting how great they are, and oh by the way the Express portion of the business is falling apart.

Advice to Senior Management

Get rid of HR and loosen the restrictions. Give more back in terms of vacation (don’t cook the books by not allowing us to rollover vacation anymore) and allow more entrepreneurialism
