I worked at DIRECTV as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

Excellent place for a summer internship. The internship program was very well-designed. The project was interesting and challenging, the coworkers friendly and helpful, and employees and management made time to meet and talk. Within engineering, internal mobility is encouraged, but the infrastructure to make it happen isn't quite there yet.

    Cons

There's a trend towards outsourcing software development and turning engineers into project managers, which may work for some but not most. Communication between developers and project manager can be difficult in this setting.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Increase opportunities for personal growth/training in new technologies/funding to attend tech conferences. Reverse outsourcing.

    Pros

The company will listen to data and execute on it quickly it. Your ideas are taken seriously and you will have opportunity to show off your strengths. The pay is above market value, and the new HQ location is really nice.

    Cons

Lots of politics like any other big company, very fast past work schedule with lots of fire drills--can be very draining for someone with a family.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Bring in younger employees, have a straight out of college training program, and try to cut down on politics.

    Pros

Great co-workers and I learnt a lot. Decent benefits and you get free satellite television service. Had the opportunity to work various business areas which greatly added to my professional experience.

    Cons

Be prepared to be laid off for after five years regardless of whether your performance is good or not. Management in the IT area do not care much about employees.

I worked at DIRECTV as a contractor (less than an year)

    Pros

Dependent on the department you work for, highly intelligent, team oriented, and fast paced environment.

    Cons

Truly talented professionals rotate in and out of DIRECTV due to an 18 month tenure limit for contract workers. Onsite employees or consultants endure significant loss to productivity while back filling or ramp-up of another worker rotating in from another failed project.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take a closer look at the vendor contracts and the job descriptions that require 18 month tenure limits. Most projects average more than 18 months and to be honest, contractors prefer to report wins on resumes, not losses. Abrupt transitions do not foster a successful implementation environment.
Improve talent management of consultants and treat them with professionalism. Due to "temporary nature" of contractors, they are hired without strategic vision in mind or how to ensure an ROI on the $ spent on labor. Due to a lack of budget management, contractors are let go on a whim with little consideration of the impacts to the projects and workers. We are not cattle.

I have been working at DIRECTV full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

You can get a good pay if you are smart enough to negotiate it properly in the beginning, there are great benefits and perks for employees (not contractors)... It's a fun place to work and a good experience...

    Cons

In Engineering, It's all about politics and blame games and relations. You go up based on relations you build, not the qualifications. Often very young and inexperienced employees become managers (folks with just a Bsc degree and less than 5 years of experience). These people get assigned to handle big projects, they fail and resort to blame wars...

2014 update: Most of engineering employees got squeezed into a newly renovated building, each placed in a tiny workspace with no privacy/dignity next to their managers. It feels like a labor camp!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

A well-educated and seasoned engineer with many years of experience should not be reporting to a young kid! The young kid (Engineering Managers) don't have the knowledge or experience to handle big projects. It's funny some of these "kids" who are promoted based on friendships lack basic English skills (Vietnamese gang in Software Engineering).
