Pros
New technology and talent employees. Good salary package with annual bonus, pension plan and free DIRECTV. Nice offices, good kitchen with free coffee, tea and hot cocoa mix. Nice gym with shower.
Cons
Work over time, off-hour and week-end on-call support for a long period. DIRECTV is outsourcing its IT development work. The current IT ratio is 40% employee and 60% contractors. More project managers than developers.
Advice to Senior Management
Employees are not happy with outsourcing concept. Morale is low. Wait and see the outcome of IT outsourcing in coming months.
Pros
free directv package and equipment if you are full time. its interesting to work with entertainment and know what kind of deals you can get your family
Cons
there is too much work always over 40 hours a week, understaffed and contractors are treated as second class citizens without proper working spaces
Advice to Senior Management
leadership should stop worrying about their numbers and focus on why there is a 25% turn over of employees hence why they have 10 million dollars devoted to contracting
Pros
A good product developed by a very talented group of individuals gives employees a lot of pride. A company that has done very well in a tough economy.
Cons
No work-life balance. It is something that is talked about but isn't realistic while there is so much to do with so little resources to support it.
Pros
Very well paid, management is very competitive, friendly environment.
Cons
Contractors get really bad cubicles. Plus there is a lot of moving around from building to building due to lack of space. Currently they are expanding.
Advice to Senior Management
Keep up the great work!
Pros
The benefits the company offers are good.
Cons
They talk the talk about work/life balance, but it is only the talk. Most people that I knew (including myself) were so overworked that we ate lunch at our desks on a daily basis. Needless to say, forget about anything remotely close to an 8 hour work day.
Destructive politics ruled the department were I worked. It is sad to see how people are out there to get each other in order to advance.
Pros
Interesting work and projects at this time.
Cons
Lack of career advancement in general.
Advice to Senior Management
Honor your contracts with your employees so that they feel respected and valuable contribution to the overall wealth and health of the company.
Pros
Extremely driven and passionate co-workers, people who want to make a difference in the industry, their jobs. People who want to develop others and constantly look for ways to make things better. Pretty good benefits, including 401(k) plan.
Cons
Egos and politics get in the way of smart decision making. It gets in the way of doing the right things. The chief executives are too worried about protecting their own "turf". In protecting their "turf" they do not protect the long term success of the company. Lack of respect for employees. Managers don't want to stick their necks out for good employees, regardless if they are their employees or not. Leadership would rather just watch good employees walk away and talk jobs with competitors or other companies. Executives don't want to face the reality of what's really happening in their organizations and make the tough decisions to deal with it.
Advice to Senior Management
Admit when you make a mistake and fix it. Quit playing the "Do as I say, not as I do" game. This is especially true with human resources senior leadership. They are supposed to take the lead for the culture and morale. Since Mike White and new hr people have come in, morale is worse than ever. People are leaving and no one in the executive leadership team cares or they give the perception they do not care. They don't want to see the problems and fix them. Quit being so interested in hiring who you know. Hire and keep the people that should have their jobs and make DTV a better place.
Pros
Free DIRECTV, generous time off, great benefits and dynamic company and industry.
Cons
Create an education channel that would offer lectures and even rudimentary learning programs.
Advice to Senior Management
solve the broadband issue
Pros
Some companies have not given employees a raise for the past few years. In fact companies are requesting employees to take a pay cut. Over here, we have the opposites. Bonus are given every year.
Cons
This place is getting too large to work in. May be over hiring. Relies too much on external companies to do the work. Easy to overspend.
Pros
Efficient internal communications and even though it is a relatively large corporation, the boundaries between management levels aren't explicit and managers talk to subordinates like it should be - friendly and as equals.
Cons
Not that many positions opening up for full time. Great opportunities for internships though. The only problem is a lot of the full time positions require at least a couple of years within the industry already. Of course, unless if you are an engineering student who just freshly graduated, other jobs like management, marketing, sales, finance etc are really only an option when you have already gained a few years of experience elsewhere.
Advice to Senior Management
I think management is great within the Ad Sales team. It's like a giant family. Every week there is a meeting where the LA Ad Sales team has a conference call with the New York team and everybody is constantly kept in the loop. So information is Keep it up!
