Pros – Great benefits, nice people. It is a great company with many perks.
Cons – Can be long hours for some. I am an executive assistant and you don't always feel a part of your group. Also, hard if you want to get into a different area. feel a little pigeon holed.

Former Employee – worked at DIRECTV as a contractor for more than a year
Pros – Professional work environment. Some great people to work with in all departments - Sales Ops, Field Services, Supply Chain, Customer Care, Analytics and IT. Had one manager that spent extra time training me and helped enable project success. Lots of challenging work.
Cons – Overly political. Difficult to get promoted. Too process oriented. Long release cycles lead to missed requirements in UAT stage. QA department is useless. Worked with one of the most diabolical managers in my career who purposely tried to sabotage one of my projects - they are no longer with the firm. Had another manager who used his team for the purpose of self aggrandizement. Challenging marketplace as future subscriber growth will be limited as competitive pressures from streaming persist.
Advice to Senior Management – Try to better understand how managers treat your employees.

Current Employee – been working at DIRECTV full-time for more than 3 years
Pros – Above average pay and benefits including complementary television service. Generous bonus and stock awards for those at the right level with sufficient tenure. Smart people willing to work hard.
Cons – Very formal, corporate environment with long hours - business attire four days a week. Frequent need to work weekends.
Culture of politics and infighting. Employees who embrace and create conflict are rewarded ahead of those who work together.
Lack of transparency in the promotion and review process - very little in the way of career development
Innovation is at a standstill - company is leaning on Latin America business to drive growth while it treads water in the US and puts all profits into stock buybacks.
Advice to Senior Management – CEO has tried to change the culture of Directv, but progress has been slow. This is a company in a rapidly changing industry that is trying hard to hold onto profits and fight change.

Current Employee – been working at DIRECTV full-time for more than a year
Pros – Over all a good company to work for. The agents and Supervisors where treated fairly and with dignity. Coming in from the outside it is hard to get the shifts you want.
Cons – No upward mobility from the supervisors position. Good shifts are taken by the folks that have been there the longest and there is no chance of moving up. Plan on working all weekends.

Current Employee – been working at DIRECTV full-time for more than a year
Pros – - Mike White's a smart, capable CEO and he's doing his best to implement a longer-term, strategic approach.
- There are definitely some very smart, dedicated people here who are committed to providing a best-in-class service to customers.
- The company has a solid reputation and it's a good brand to have on your resume.
Cons – - Rest of the senior execs not necessarily as strategic-minded as the CEO and can be too tactical.
- Feel that the company makes the wrong trade-off's between financial engineering to keep Wall Street happy (e.g., stock buybacks) vs. deeper investments to stay competitive in the long run.
- Career progression not as meritocratic and transparent as one would hope for and feels arbitrary at times - often depends on who you work for - some rise rapidly, some don't. Can be frustrating for those who've come from more meritocratic environments.
- Very average general management skills amongst senior execs, especially in IT.
Advice to Senior Management – - Empower your employees more and give them the autonomy that goes such a long way towards creating employee satisfaction.
- Create meaningful career progression opportunities - often people get brought in but there's no clear plan on how they move to the next level.

Current Employee – been working at DIRECTV full-time for more than 8 years
Pros – Work cohorts are generally very easy to approach and get along with. There is a lot to learn here, and a lot of proprietary systems, so everyone depends on having approachable people who are experts in various domains. Also, DirecTV sits on a pile of subscription money, provides a lot of stability and job security; people are rarely let go.
Cons – There are a surprising number of "clunkers" in the mid-management director and senior manager levels who cause more harm than good. From my perspective, all of these people have just stayed with the company a long long time, are savvy enough, and then are reluctantly promoted after time. The best mid level manager are the newer ones.
Advice to Senior Management – Work on getting the company leaner and more nimble to react to change. Sometime in 2015 to 2017 it will become as cost effective to broadcast bits to a customer over the internet compared to satellite.
