Pros
Great pay without a college degree
Choose your own schedule
4 weeks of training
Sales Comission
Bonuses based on your scores
Health, Dental, Vision
401k (company matches up to $1500/year)
Stock purchase (15% discount off market price)
Free DISH Service (America's Top 250 normally 69.99, we just pay tax which about $3/mo.)
One-on-One time with coach to help improve ourselves
Cons
They offer optional time off a lot, if you aren't careful you won't have a paycheck large enough to cover expenses.
Talking all day when you are sick is tough
Advice to Senior Management
Keep a closer eye on your employees. If you notice that an employee has a sore throat or has lost their voice, offer to give them time off of the phones for training. Little things like that make a big difference to us.
Pros
Good pay, good vans. The warehouse finally got their act together.
Cons
DISH will promote you, and if you stay at DISH getting paid that much, DISH will lay you off and pay a new hire less to do the same work you did.
Advice to Senior Management
Jump off a bridge.
Pros
It was a better job than most are able to find where I live on a remote ranch. They do supply your vehicle and all your gas and pay you from the time you leave your house.. which can add up into numerous over time hours when they are busy.
Cons
Their software acquired in the summer of 2011 has no point of reference for miles and miles covered by remote technicians. Therefore anyone who must travel a great deal will always have low productivity and probably be ineligible for promotion regardless of how good they are.
Advice to Senior Management
Use a little common sense. Don't go entirely for computer numbers crunching!
Pros
Values and idealogy are intact with my belief. Overall good job (in field at DNS side of company) in that you don't have to be micro managed or do same to others
Cons
Company tends to be driven through Jack Welch GE management style. ALL focus is on "bottom 20%" employees, managers, locations etc. Little recognition for who is doing what RIGHT. Some awareness of the top 10% but no real answers on how the middle can be better.
Lots of focus on the technicians (face of Dish), but horrible support for their local managers
Company is really stretching the field management down to bare minimum (cost and overhead) so it is very hard to have time to develop new staff or develop young managers.
Advice to Senior Management
At a certain point, you will have to realize that you have squeezed the field operations to a breaking point. I worked 5 12-14 hour days and spent many Saturdays or Sundays doing useless presentations and checklist that were dated, irrevelant, and rarely used by anyone. When I had to have my young managers with families start having to do same I realized it was time to move on.
Pros
dish commission structure is incomparable. no other major telecommunication company pays what dish does in inside sales.
Cons
you talk to some very un-intelligent people on the phones.
Pros
Decent pay compared to other jobs in the area. Management willing to work with employees. Tools are given to employees to succeed.
Cons
Focus more on quality and efficiency, not speed.
Advice to Senior Management
Don't be afraid to get constructive criticism or negative feedback, use the criticism to better the company.
Pros
There is a good training program. Field Service Managers do a good job of advising when you run into trouble. If you are good, you can be assured of stable work.
Cons
Metrics used to judge performance can be an unreliable indicator of competency. Speed is valued more than precision. Some standards make it difficult to compete in some areas.
Advice to Senior Management
Revise and allow unapproved RG6 cabling if the reasons for disallowing that cabling is for pride/brand awareness instead of technical concerns.
Pros
Steady Pay, indoors, eventually got laid off (con in the short term, but pro in the long term)
Cons
Basically everything else. I had to account for every minute of my day. Management treated me (and everyone else) terribly. I really was just a terrible experience.
Advice to Senior Management
Treat your employees like people. You don't have to treat them great... just decent would be a huge improvement. You wouldn't have to spend so much money hiring new employees if you treated your existing employees with a little decency.
Pros
Pay is decent, you can learn a lot about the industry if you try, customers can be enjoyable to talk to if you are nice to them. Some people there are very knowledgeable and/or good to work with/for. Dish makes smart acquisitions like Sling and Blockbuster.
Cons
People are constantly, CONSTANTLY getting fired. The turnover rate in my job title is probably 90%. I've only lasted as long as I have through luck, hard work, and previous experience in the industry. They are FAR too willing to fire people. Do NOT count on being able to keep your job here.
I've seen several managers, including a second level manager, as well as probably dozens of reps, fired for next to nothing. Dish has a TERRIBLE reputation for this in my town, Christiansburg, VA. What's the point of starting to work here if you're just going to get fired? It makes no sense.
Why spend so much money training employees, only to fire them in a couple of months? It's ridiculous.
Also, as is typical with the call center industry, lots of managers are uneducated and EXTREMEly unprofessional.
Advice to Senior Management
Even though I've made P4P (pay for performance) every month since I started, I'm still thinking about quitting. Why? The environment is flat-out MEAN and unhelpful. Dish's bad rep in C-burg is deserved, earned, whatever you want to say. I could probably get promoted if I tried, but I'm not motivated to try, because managers are far too focused on keeping their jobs to actually make changes, quite often. Sometimes you NEED to rock the boat a little. Middle managers are largely useless, and the ones at Dish are no exception. Sorry guys, I'm not trying to hurt feelings.
I realize workplace politics are bad in most jobs, but...you could do better with keeping things professional. Again, not trying to hurt feelings.
Pros
Free TV, Nice location, Paid on time, Benefits are not too bad
Cons
Working at Dish is unprofessional
Advice to Senior Management
Flexible time. Treat employees as professionals
