I have been working at DRS Technologies full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Ability to work 9/80 schedule so you work 9 hour days and have off every other Friday. Full tuition reimbursement based on grades without a cost limit.

    Cons

There is not much thought or concern for employees by upper management. This creates a negative environment with many people trying to leave or just unhappy with their job. Not just my opinion, but fact based on employee surveys completed every couple years.

    Pros

Many top-notch, professional co-workers who care about the quality of their work and their customer, go the extra mile and are solid team players.

    Cons

Senior management of TSI (Technical Services, Inc.) either didn't have a clear vision/mission for their organization and their long-term future or had a strong vision but failed to communicate it clearly throughout the organization.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Cast a vision, make it relevant and then communicate it repeatedly to your employees. Care for your people since TSI is a service industry and they are your greatest "natural resource."

I worked at DRS Technologies full-time

    Pros

Small company atmosphere, minimal bureaucracy, rapid pace.

    Cons

3 VPs in 3 years; no strategic vision, no business plan other than 'hope', too much reliance upon legacy TI history and 'us against the world'. Insufficient experience in line managers results in floundering staff. Experienced staff (worked other places) are continually frustrated with lack of guidance to those that need it. Declining business base with no workable plan to grow.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Look outside to obtain necessary leadership and management expertise (invest in the company - you will have to pay for the necessary experience and expertise that does not reside in-house currently). Hiring from within, when no one is experienced or qualified for leadership / management just perpetuates the problems. This also implies removing the current senior staff / management that impede improvement. Hire leaders who can cast a vision and get the staff on board.

Offers wide variety of experience, but often does not provide sufficient resources to facilitate success.

I have been working at DRS Technologies full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

DRS product lines and customer base are so diverse that there is often a wide variety of work. Project-oriented business allows cradle-to-grave involvement with each project, which is very satisfying when the delivered product is put into operation with/by the customer. Office culture varies but generally the employees within are encouraged to, and do, work as a cohesive team for each project (and between projects when workload allows, which is not often). Promotions are not common but upward mobility within a job grade is provided based on demonstrated ability. Benefits are above average with health care, 401k, etc.

    Cons

Usually, tight project budgets means that the projects are understaffed for the amount of work that needs to be done. Conflicts between the engineering organization (technical needs) and and the program management organization (budget restrictions) often arise and the technical output quality often suffers. Operations (production, supply chain, quality) departments are significantly understaffed and the engineering teams often are expected to do the jobs that would ordinarily be staffed from the operations departments, in addition to their engineering responsibilities.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Rebuild company philosophy to an engineering-first philosophy, since the majority of the work done at the company is product development. Other departments should be adequately staffed to perform their functions well, since product delivery has the biggest effect on customer satisfaction.

I worked at DRS Technologies full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Great opportunities for advancement. Strong focus on customer mission. Agile in developing advanced technologies and systems. Great collaboration between divisions and subcontractors.

    Cons

Recent drop in customer budgets dependent on US DoD spending collided with owner's deep need to pull cash out rather than investing has lead to rapid contraction in staff.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need to invest more in corporate level technology vision. Find a unifying core strength and go for it. Need to leverage collection gems into a crown.

Once was a good company to work for

Former Employee - Software Engineer in Buffalo, NY

I worked at DRS Technologies full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

None, as they have decided to close the division in Buffalo, NY. Once were purchased by DRS things started to get worse year by year which eventually led to the closing.

    Cons

Too many to list as management handled the closing very, very poorly.
