Current Employee - Senior QA in Kansas City, MO

I have been working at DST Systems full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Good place to work, Good products where we can find lot of scope for implementations and improvements

    Cons

Middle level management not so good, Lack of encouragement for lower level associates
Lack of proper trainings to improve the product knowledge
There is a place to write goals etc., but no review or support from management

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management has to concentrate on middle level management in such a way that they should identify the right candidates and experts and assign the responsibilities

Former Employee - Technical Intern in Kansas City, MO

I worked at DST Systems as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

    Great people and good pay.

    Cons

Very rigid corporate structure, so there is a lot of red tape. Technologies are a bit behind the times and I wouldn't mind a more relaxed dress code.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It may be advantageous to try to cut out some of the red tape between different sections of the company, and it would be a good idea to try to catch up to current technologies a bit faster.

    Pros

    Very robust system technology
They invest in tools and their system to ensure a good, stable environment for developers.
The system is very well documented technically.
They employ good standards and best practices unlike anywhere else.

    Cons

It all depends on what group you end up in. Some are wonderful, some are horrid.
Ever since the layoffs in 2010, there's no sense of stability any more.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Have a greater appreciation for your people. They are amazing and are your biggest asset.

I worked at DST Systems full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Good benefits. The employees are worth interacting with.

    Cons

DST used to be a good place to work. They had a family atmosphere and most people were happy to go into work. However, since the original CEO has retired, the atmosphere has changed in a negative way. People just come in get the job done and leave. It's too bad.

I have been working at DST Systems full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Good benefits as far as health insurance, vacation, 401K. Decent opportunities to advance depending on the department.

    Cons

Lack of training and support. Depending on the department, overtime can be excessive. Pay is embarrassingly below industry standards. Middle management can make or break your career which is a scary thought. Steer clear of USIRKS-although it's in transition there is incompetence at every level and management tends to reward those that don't challenge them and toe the company line.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire smart people and reward them. Quit rewarding incompetence and get rid of the dead weight.

I worked at DST Systems full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Large, well-established, stable company. Good new-employee training, and plenty of opportunity for ongoing training. Diverse job opportunities and opportunities for advancement. Very structured work environment, which is not necessarily a bad thing, but not every employee fits into that box.

    Cons

Pay and benefits were a little behind the times for comparable companies. Very little flexibility in work arrangements. Upper management stuck in the "old boy" corporate mindset. Not on the cutting edge of benefits or employee retention.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue with great training and mentoring, but listen to your employees. It's much better to be open to new ideas to keep good employees than to remain rigid and lose people who are talented, but are looking for a better work/life balance.

Former Employee - Mutual Funds and Corporate Securities Representative in Kansas City, MO
Former Employee - Mutual Funds and Corporate Securities Representative in Kansas City, MO

I worked at DST Systems full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Great place to work if you can get out of or skip the processing area for mutual funds and reits.
Some Good Managers ( This determines whether or not you are able to get out of the processing world.

    Cons

Very boring work as it is repetitive and your starring at a computer screen for 8+ hours a day.
All lower level managers are friends and it is rather difficult to move up if you are in the processing world.
The way the company rates their employees on the quality of their work can be very upsetting because of the way that they do it.
You end up longing to go to lunch during every morning because of how boring the job is.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If someone wants to transfer out of your department don't try to stop them... Also, start looking into your lower level management because some people are very difficult to work with and break a lot of company rules.

    Continuous growth opportunities.

    Current Employee - Anonymous Employee
    Current Employee - Anonymous Employee

I have been working at DST Systems full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

There is a position for everyone regardless of skill set or experience level. There are opportunities within the organization that continuously promotes from within.

    Cons

Some positions require you to have a flexible work schedule since many IT positions are now overseas.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give your changes at least 3 months to be set before making additional changes. Change is continuous but how do you know what works and what doesn't? Employees aren't even sure of the changes since they are happening to the same people repeatedly.
