ProsChallenging but rewarding work. Plenty of opportunities (especially for Engineers) to move around the company. Constantly striving to improve.

The blind leading the inept.

Communications (Former Employee)
Detroit, MI

I worked at DTE Energy full-time for more than 10 years

ProsYou get paid! You're a monopoly! You can lie and get what you want from the ignorant MPSC!

ConsPoor managers, no guts, yes men, total complacency, no responsibility to anyone but themselves. Yep that sums it up!

Advice to Senior ManagementDo you really need McKinsey to come in again because nobody in middle management seems to know how to lead? (Not that McKinsey will have anyone with any knowledge about anything since they only hire folks fresh out of school with no experience in the field they are supposed to be consulting!) What a money / brain drain!

Lots of politics built into the system, some decent people, tale of the haves and have nots for customer service.

Customer Care Representative (Former Employee)
Detroit, MI

I worked at DTE Energy as a contractor for more than 5 years

ProsThere was a good support staff for us: Home Protection Program team, Continuous Improvement, training staff, monitoring coaches, etc. The gas side of the business seems very responsive to the customer care team. Good sales incentives that we pushed the company to get in the turn on expansion team. Safety first mentality which I am sure is awesome to have in the field.

ConsPolicy changes every five minutes, it's a way of life the company even admits. This is very apparent to the customer service department. Poor decision makers in charge of contractors, lots of micro-managing and favoritism. Contractors essentially have two managers over them: one contract and one DTE in addition to their team leaders. With the DTE manager immediately over us, it is her way or the highway. No raises unless hired on by the company which is dictated by the results of an assessment and interview process, that some of us felt very strongly was rigged. Horrible medical benefits. Air gets shut off at the hottest times during the summer to "conserve energy" as well as lights turned off for hours at a time. Few paid days off and even fewer sick days. Totally different if actual DTE employee. I am looking at my experience. Your mileage may certainly vary by department and stripe.

Advice to Senior ManagementMr. Anderson, you are doing a good job with the vision of the company, stock value, and overall image to the outside world. I now implore you to fix the inside and clean house with a lot of these customer service managers(not immediate supervisors). So many of them do not understand what we do. There needs to be a less stressful work environment, otherwise you will end up seeing more and more turnover.
