I worked at Daimler Trucks North America full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Pay is ok - but compared to overall transportation industry not stellar, still good benefits, employee car lease program is a positive, Portland location is positive.

    Cons

Overall, a very close minded place - most of management does not like change, even when proven that the change will result in better product, process. Not a good place for top talent to work since it is not an environment that values it.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't just act like you want to make positive changes, really do it.

    Pros

As an intern, you are given some responsibility depending on your department. Good work is definitely noticed and complimented.

    Cons

Daimler is a huge company, and due to the size of this company, there is a lot of red tape and bureaucracy that goes on which kills productivity

I worked at Daimler Trucks North America

    Pros

Good work / life balance, relaxed environment, methodical work. If you like vehicles/trucks, you will enjoy the company culture.

    Cons

Workplace seems to lack innovation. Work can be a bit tedious and mundane, often it is questionable whether the data you are collecting will eventually be useful.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Promote communication.

Management heavy, in an antiquated top down corporate environment.

I worked at Daimler Trucks North America full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

The pay is pretty good, decent location, and a relatively stable work environment, if you can keep your head down and not question anything. Good vacation time.

    Cons

DTNA in general is very corporate and bureaucratic. This isn't always a bad thing, but most of the management is in a constant rotation (except for the one's that Germany sends over for 3-5 years).

Decision making is extremely sluggish, and unstable. If you are motivated by deadlines and quality of work, this is not the place for you. If you like decisions made by committee and are more concerned with "process" than product, this is very much the place for you.

Germany constantly micromanages from afar and constantly sends over managers who have to learn the culture, market, and product. They try to make their mark, then leave after a few years for a promotion at Mercedes. Most have very little experience with the American way of doing business, and there seems to be a constant culture clash and perceived arrogance.

DTNA's version of "advancement" more closely resembles simply rotating people into different departments, even if they have no experience in the department they are supposed to manage. I think the idea behind this is that it keeps people fresh, but what it really does is force mid-level and lower employees to train the new management constantly.

Don't let this deter you from applying here, just be aware that you are number and not a person at this company, unless you come from Germany.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your quality employees and respect them before they all disappear, and many of them did disappear in the last few years. Try to lead the market, and hire people to are experts in a technical field, not just experts in management.

Very old-school, hierarchical, inefficient corporate environment.

    Pros

Great benefits if you are an employee and not a contractor, make good products, opportunities to cross-train, lots of longevity with employees.

    Cons

Many terrible managers who mismanage their employees. Things are inefficient because all major decisions have to be cleared by headquarters in Germany who have very little idea about American corporate structure - for instance, they use Lotus Notes as their email and calendar software. It so clunky, limited, and outdated that it is hard for people to do their jobs efficiently. Most major decisions include so many departments and people, that it is hard to get things done on the U.S. side as well. Some managers are good and people have a great experience, but Daimler is also an asshole-magnet.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

To take some more notice of current corporate cultures and realize how outdated things are at Daimler when they don't necessarily need to be. Things do not need to be that convoluted. Please get some ability to make autonomous decisions from Germany and make things easier on your employees.

I worked at Daimler Trucks North America full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Stable company; pay and benefits are attractive. Managers and above get use of company car (Mercedes), which is replaced every two years. There are some very hard-working people employed by DTNA.

    Cons

Directives coming from across the pond can be challenging. Many long-term employees have sense of "entitlement" and/or are disengaged. Some areas are poorly managed, seem to have gender bias, and are downright toxic.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Executive team doesn't appear cohesive; many decisions seem to drive big bonus now at the expense of long-term success.

    Pros

Famous, Brand name company with lots of opportunity..

    Cons

Rules/ standard documents were expired, and a lot of undocumented work. The management just do what they feel like using their power. A lot of people worked for a long time but they have no interest in improving the department in a way that is best for the department and the employees. Fixing things is not enough. Slacking in a way. Favoritism: if they like you or you're the relatives/friend, they will promote you. If not, they will treat you like an enemy. No consistency at work, very messy.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please check your middle management people, make sure that they know how to operate the business. Most of them work for a long period of time for the company, bu that does not mean that they know or understand on how to improve the company. Maybe perform the "undercover boss" show to see how they actually work. Hire people with a degree, get rid of the old, unuseful employee.
