I have been working at Daimler Trucks North America full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

The benefits are great (vacation) and work hours are flexible. Opportunity for growth and advancement is available for those who wish to take advantage of it. The company is becoming more technically advanced.

    Cons

The salary is modest. Upon reaching a salary level, it is difficult to advance in pay scale.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Upper management needs to be more accepting of new ideas and suggestions.

Typical huge corporation. Too many silos, company keeps people on as contractors for years.

    Current Contractor - Anonymous Contractor

I have been working at Daimler Trucks North America as a contractor (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Opportunity to learn, flexible work hours. Feels more stable than most contract jobs because they keep renewing the contract.

    Cons

Despite recent initiative to convert long-time contractors to full-time employees, many positions are still contract jobs. Pay is below market rate. IT is divided into so many silos that it's difficult to find the right person or department, and the employee portal is badly organized and out of date. Bringing technology up to date takes forever, and IT projects are underfunded.

    Pros

    - Salary
    - Flexible hours
    - Smart people
    - Team outings

    Cons

Upper management isn't welcome to change. Non-German speakers will not really fit into the culture in the workplace (a lot of German speaking employees).

I have been working at Daimler Trucks North America full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

The company philosophy as a whole I enjoy so the comments made are not meant to be derogative but constructive.
Company has shutdowns on Dec holidays.
Majority of people are nice to work with.
They have a MB leasing program for employees with attractive rates.

    Cons

S&M Aftermarket management plays favoritism with colleagues that come from Detroit Diesel, when it comes to job placement and perks.

They have eliminated or changed many of the benefits to the companies advantage/employees disadvantage, such as bonuses BUT they have kept the bonuses for the managers. So depending what position you are at, it could be a pro or a con.

I have worked with many woman professionals in my career, many absolutely outstanding but here S&M Aftermarket managers (they manage a team l4) are very clique and seem to instigate or thrive on gossip with other female managers. From what I have observed they seem to thrive on having someone as their target. Their male counterparts seem to be at a loss sometimes by this behavior. Upper management does not realize what is going on, I suppose because no one dares speak up.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Germany should have employees evaluate their managers in a confidential way. Many of the areas have a small number of direct reports so the managers would figure out who had negative feedback. This has discourage employees from speaking up in the past.

Their needs to be a program in place to instruct managers, placed in the Fort Mill office, how to run a team and focus on being professionally fair, balanced and lead/motivate a team. Instead of placing managers based on who they know, their degree ( you can have a degree but not have leadership qualities) or how well they can schmooze upper management who seem oblivious either because the profits are there so they get their bonuses which prompts them to turn a blind eye or they don't want to deal with the reality that non-management employees are not happy.

I have been working at Daimler Trucks North America full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

decent pay and benefits if you can stay away from managers and upper management.

    Cons

Managers outright fabricate situations and statements in meetings and to HR due to their lack of education and knowledge. Mangers and upper management promote a fearful and secretive atmosphere for all employee(s): most never come out on the shop floor and only go to meetings or work from home (via cellphone communication). Supervision and hourly are not appreciated nor respected.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Corporate needs to realize that Management (managers and Upper management) at the plants is out of control. They need to replace all managers. TOS is a joke. They have not idea what 6 sigma is let alone safety.

I have been working at Daimler Trucks North America full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Fair pay, good benefits, and stability make Daimler Trucks a very attractive place to work. The company has invested in the betterment of it's home city, Portland, Oregon, and encourages personal growth by offering in-house classes and reimbursing tuition. This is a company that continues to try to improve by making long term investments.

    Cons

The size of the company and the emebedded work practices can make navigating and adapting very challenging. While an ideal work-life balance is the goal, this isn't persued in all departments.

I worked at Daimler Trucks North America full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Co-workers were pleasant to work with.
It was nice working in a global company with many different personalities.
Great opportunity to learn from others outside of assigned department.

    Good vacation time.

Overall, this was a great first job and some departments are better than others.

Advice: Gain experience and move on or better yet work someplace else

    Cons

Expect to work 60-70 hour work weeks on a regular basis and more during the crunch times.
Management is bonus driven and only cares about quarterly results.
Unrealistic targets are set resulting in diminished businesses relationships due to aggressive negotiation style.
Mandatory training was inadequate and wasted time.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Don't yell at your employees.
Don't set unrealistic targets because you want a bonus.
Don't allow others to cheat the system(s) because you want a bonus.
Don't ruin supplier relationships because you want a bonus.

I have been working at Daimler Trucks North America full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Very good benefits packages (health care, 401k, vacation). Company has locations all over the US and world so there *can* be opportunities to move, as long as your manager likes you as a person.

    Cons

Opportunities exist only for those who are liked by (or buddies with) management. Many Glassdoor reviews have mentioned that longer-term employees seem "complacent" -- this is because they have learned that challenging the status quo gets you marked as not being a "team player" or some similarly non-specific euphemism. The "team player" one seems to be their favorite, though, as it is such an easy accusation to levy and nearly impossible for the out-of-favor employee to defend against. So you learn (over time) to keep your mouth shut, laugh at all your manager's jokes, and sing the "Everything is Awesome!" song in your head.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Allow employees to defend themselves against accusations thrown at them during the management "reviews" before the statements appear on their own annual reviews. Many employees are being hurt simply because a particular manager doesn't like them. Lower level managers have started working together to boost their own employees while simultaneously cutting down the employees of rival managers. The atmosphere is getting toxic.
