Pros

Everybody at the 2 Dairy Queens I worked at were very close and friendly with one another. Store owners were almost never around, and if they were, they were very easy to talk to about anything, from movies to discussing which university programs to choose from. Generally a very lighthearted and upbeat mood in the store. Very flexible with schedualing.

Cons

The store can be dead for anywhere up to an hour at a time. The store can be packed with people for hours on end. Work hours are sometimes hard to get if you're a newer employee. Oh and cakes aren't the most fun thing to make. Hauling large amounts of garbage almost forces you to come to terms about western society and the extremely large amounts of waste it produces. If you work and eat there often, you'll notice a decline in your health.

Advice to Senior Management

You have to give raises much more frequently. I was at minimum wage for far longer than I'd like to admit and when my pay went up, minimum wage went up soon after and my pay stayed the same.

Pros

It is a wonderful place to work. I have been with them for 11 years and it is by far the best job i have ever had.

Cons

Long hours. People dont always listen to what you have to say. new people do not understand the core values.

Advice to Senior Management

Dairy queen is a long established franchise. dont keep trying to change everything that has been working very well for close to 70 years.

Pros

Free icecream, fun people to work with, friends came and visited, the management was cool with everyone since she was used to working with high school kids.

Cons

You had to work nights, and during the summer that is unfortunate because your friends are always doing something at night in the summer.

Advice to Senior Management

It is a great place to work as a high school student. They were flexible with the hours when I had tests and it was always busy in the summer which made the time go by really fast.

Dairy Queen

Pros

Working with our team was a real pleasure at times. We had some stressful situations but we worked well together.

Cons

Management, well some management, didn't care much for their employees. It was got the work done no matter what and at any cost.

Advice to Senior Management

Even if you do not like your employees, you hired them, so you should at least respect the time and effort that they put forth.

Dairy Queen Kitchen Cook in Pullman, WA:   (Past Employee - 2009)

Pros

Sometimes you can relax but most of the time its go go go. And its really not fun what you have to be "go go go"ing on. Greasy hamburgers, fries, etc. Most people know what it is like to work in fast food and this is not much different. The only plus here is that ice cream is involved. So if you happen to work at one of the franchises with nice management, you might get ice cream. Yay.

Cons

Bad management. They need to learn how to run a business. It wasn't a horrible job but they would sometimes even yell at employees. Not good!

Advice to Senior Management

Try a field in something else. Nice try on being good management, but not really.

Dairy Queen General Manager in Minneapolis, MN:   (Current Employee)

Pros

Potentially a fun enviroment to work in ice cream and smiles. DQ story and a smile is the motto. Lots of people to person interaction- regular customers, daily routine varies just enough to keep it entertaining. Blizzards are fun to make almost as fun to eat.

Cons

The seasonality of the job- summer very busy, winter extremely slow. The spring is hectic- hiring new crew and busy.
Very complicated training program which only works if you have lots of time to train. Must ensure you are hiring ideal employes or you will be training , firing and the starting all over again.

Advice to Senior Management

Senior management needs to jump in and help when needed, be fair and have reasonable expectations. rEVIEW your managers and be fair and unbiased towards them.

Dairy Queen Cashier in Columbus, OH:   (Past Employee - 2006)

Pros

It is a good starting off point for future jobs. It also shows you how fast food restaurants work. Can be a great place to meet and make friends along the way. You learn how to make blizzards and sundaes. It is a very fast environment and will teach you very quickly to stay on top of things.

Cons

It is a hard job if you are not used to being on your feet. It will be either very busy or very quiet. One thing you will find is there are endless things to do. If you don't mind cleaning, restocking, grilling, cashiering, then you will love this job.

Advice to Senior Management

Training, training, training. I can't say this enough. Guide your people and make sure they understand their jobs.

Dairy Queen Assistant Manager in Morrisville, NC:   (Past Employee - 2008)

Pros

Its a place where you can make minimum wage or get paid to do a lot of work for 25 thousand dollars a year. if poverty is a lifestyle that you want feel free and apply. If there is any reason to work there i would not know what those are. Dairy queen is a place that new people to the country can see what america is really about. long gruelling hours are the norm but for seven dollars an hour you may as well collect change on the side of the road. overall dairy queen can change someones life.

Cons

long hours horrible shifts greasy messy one uniform that you never wash

Advice to Senior Management

Close the worthless store

Dairy Queen Brazzier in Vancouver, BC (Canada):   (Current Employee)

Pros

They don't really need anything from you except commitment. The managers are nice and respects your availability, but it sometimes ends up with you not getting any shifts at all. Another reason is that it is perfect for a high school student who needs some extra money. I found it very nice that the company likes to employ younger people. Employee discounts is also great at the company!

Cons

Low pay, and no chance of advancing at all due to the way the company is structured. A few managers treat employees as expendable costs rather than an asset that helps the company generate revenue.

Advice to Senior Management

They're all doing it to lower costs, I don't blame them. Treasure your young employees because one day they might do something to help DQ, such as opening up a few franchise.
