    Good part-time job for students

I worked at Dairy Queen part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Gain customer service experience and learn how to manage stressful situations.

    Cons

Management is okay. No benefits. No bonuses. Pay is minimum wage. Gets real busy during summer so expect to be on your feet a lot!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need to better organize employees' schedules in order to avoid conflict during busy times and more efficiently balance out tasks for faster service, especially for drive thru.

I have been working at Dairy Queen (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The food is good , but we were constantly running out of food because upper management would change food orders. Vendors were disgruntled because they were not paid on time.

    Cons

Promises of promotion, bonuses and a full management staff were not kept. Some managers were not allowed to fulfill thier duties and others were always unhappy and ill-tempered.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep stores fully staffed with upper management and let unhappy/bad tempered managers go. Reward managers and employess that do their jobs.

I have been working at Dairy Queen full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Each Dairy Queen is owned by different franchise owners. I get a great pay. They have said we can get a monthly bonus if we make our labor, sales, and COGs each month, but I have never seen a bonus yet.

    Cons

I do have to work 50 hours a week minimum. (for a single person like me its not to bad, but someone in a relationship it is difficult to have a personal life). I do not get to work 8-5, only once or twice a week, because most sales are at night and upper management wants me to be there to ensure product is delivered correctly.
Making labor is a HUGE deal to my franchise owners, I do not have a problem making the labor, but sometimes we have to sacrifice other aspects to look good on paper, (less employees could mean slower service)
Depending on where you are located, your age of employees could be mainly high school kids, therefore the maturity level is low, which means you have to stay on their case constantly.
And as in any restaurant business, there are some rude customers that can get on your nerves.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

the franchisee owner has a lot of stores, they do a pretty good job, but they need to offer the managers of the stores 401k, and health care benefits

I have been working at Dairy Queen part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Great Staff, Super Busy, Always Something to do, Raises Quickly

    Cons

Sometimes too busy, Bosses get stressed too easily

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Possibly have the managers give the kids more responsibility. I feel like we were just work horses being told what to do. We should be given an ajenda at the beginning of the day and do those things.

I have been working at Dairy Queen full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

I absolutely loved working at my Dairy Queen, but it was a franchise and was under limited control by corporate Dairy Queen. Therefore I do not know what it is like for other workers, at other Dairy Queens. My managers were fantastic, and I loved the fast-paced, yet relaxed style of working there.

    Cons

Young average age of the employees. It gets pretty angsty, but in the end it's okay.

    Cons

Little room to move up the management ladder. Was there for 2 years and after asking to be trained to be a shift leader for a good year I quit.

    Pros

Fun, Tasty, Teamwork, Time goes by quickly, Creative atmosphere, Franchise allows for efficient systems and energy saving procedures.

    Cons

Very Fast Paced, can get stressful during busy times, Pay is minimum wage usually, unless you move, tendency for drama considering 80% of the workers are women/girls. Late night closing shifts.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep on encouraging workers, complimenting them on a job well done and empower them to learn more each day and accomplish more.
