Server

Server (Former Employee)
Portland, OR

I worked at Darden part-time for more than 3 years

ProsBetter training than most Restaurtants

ConsManagers don't listen to employee concerns. No full-time opportunities.

Advice to Senior ManagementFocus on lowering turnover. You lose too many good people when you don't pay close attention to what employees need.

Typical corporate chain restaurant

Server (Former Employee)
Seattle, WA

I worked at Darden full-time for more than 3 years

ProsI liked the people i worked with, the food was actually pretty darn good and you were able to make decent money with the small section they gave you.

Cons3-4 table sections, managers were complete idiots and inconsistent at best, managers never stood up for employees, mandatory spiel to every table

Advice to Senior ManagementMore management training for the individual restaurants.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company

Intern, Finance

Finance Intern (Former Employee)
Orlando, FL

I worked at Darden as an intern for less than a year

ProsGreat hours, relaxed atmosphere, strong collaboration

ConsNot supportive of individual achievement, not looking for entrepreneurial thinking. Somewhat of a "punch the clock" mentality, just doing your daily job and getting out of there.

Advice to Senior ManagementPush people to challenge more frequently. The atmosphere seems to promote going along with the "as-is" without rocking the boat, so to speak, which may lead to a loss of good ideas.

Extensive training process that did not result in a better job or salary for doing well.

Waitress (Former Employee)
Boston, MA

I worked at Darden full-time for less than a year

ProsThe managers all seemed to really enjoy what they were doing. Was able to make a good amount of money. The video online made it seem like the working culture was very fun and outgoing.

ConsThe training process took almost an entire month then a final exam at the end before I was able to begin working. The turnover rate was very high and I believe this was due to the very strict rules of management. If you were 30 seconds late you were written up and spoken to harshly, if this happened three times you were automatically fired no matter how good you were as an employee or what your excuse was for being late.

Advice to Senior ManagementWork on the employee turnover rate by understanding who so many people left or were fired so quickly.

Bahama Breeze

Server (Current Employee)
Towson, MD

I have been working at Darden part-time for more than a year

ProsEmployees like family, most of the time good management, you can truly grow within the company. Overall Darden is a great company to use as a stepping stone.

ConsNone off the top of my head. It's a restaurant. There are going to be bad guests and bad tips, that's part of the business. Overall though there isn't too much

Advice to Senior ManagementRequire gratuity on all checks past 9pm.
