I worked at Darque Tan full-time for less than a year

    Pros

You are rewarded for your monthly sales.

    Cons

    You work alone every shift.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Not everyone wants to pay $120 for tanning lotion so don't pressure your employees and make them feel terrible because they can't sell it. College kids are poor!

I worked at Darque Tan full-time

    Pros

I met some decent people working here, free tanning, half off lotions/packages, learned management and customer service skills

    Cons

Coporate will treat you horribly, favoritism, snobby co-workers and corporate, other employees bail on their shifts so you have to stay longer hours or stress to find someone asap, horrible pay considering Darque Tan's yearly revenue, will not pay you for time you work-if you work past closing time you will not get paid, yet they expect you to stay and clean.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Corporate needs to step down from their high horse and treat employees better.

I worked at Darque Tan part-time for more than a year

    Pros

    Commission
    Responsibility given young people
    Discounts and free products
    Develops sales and interpersonal skills

    Cons

Changing business structure gives less import to entry level employees
Company is getting so big that it is becoming impersonal and some perks are being downgraded

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Model other districts after the Austin district and break larger district down into smaller components
Bring back the assistant manager title and the old commission system

I worked at Darque Tan for more than a year

    Pros

Tons of perks for their top performers. Ability to work multiple locations and work overtime. Corporate tries to work with every sales team member to give them the best opportunity to succeed.

    Cons

Managers at salons are not well trained in being managers only sales. This causes many problems with scheduling, issues between staff members, and training new bed cleaners (which should be more important; serious health code violations could occur without proper training). Problems with beds and salons are not fixed quickly. There is not a good system for requesting time off or finding someone to cover shifts in cases of emergency.

I have been working at Darque Tan

    Pros

Discounted tanning, discounted products, job is inherently easy, ability to work at any of the stores and overtime is allowed up to 10 hours a week.

    Cons

Little pay. Company is very cheap, try to save money anywhere they can. Corporate staff will call and scream at you if they so choose to. A lot of illegal things happening there. The duties are laid out so that you always have something to do, but you are often times forced to stay after close to help and they do not pay you after the store closes. You are automatically clocked out. Sometimes your only task for the day is to scrub the grout on the floor with bleach for hours. A woman comes and "inspects" your store and rates it, if it "fails" then people can get written up and fired... something as small as a dab of lotion on a few walls can fail you. There is no call ins, if you can't make it to work and can't find coverage you are fired... if you are late then they deduce your hourly wage...

You always work alone and some stores force you to work a double, sometimes as your only shift. Doubles are either 12.25 hours if the store is 9-9 or 14.25 if the store opens at 8am, and closes at 10. Managers work 35-40 hours, "assistant managers" do 20-25, sales associates do 15. The only time you work with someone else is if you have a bed cleaner, at various busy stores.

Managers have to always be on call. If someone quits at their store, they have to drop what they are doing and go to the store immediately. They can't leave and go out of town, or say no they are busy... they have to always be at their store. If they do want to leave, they have to give their keys to a difference manager to cover...

Some stores are so dirty because they get neglected customers won't tan there anymore, and corporate expects you to clean it all and have it all done within hours...

The corporate office gets involved in drama and picks battles with staff. One guy is in charge of all of human resources and he basically does as he wants and picks and chooses who to get in trouble, who to allow to do things. There are "favorites", managers that have worked there for 4+ years that slide under the rug like nothing.

Have to count inventory every day at morning, shift change and at close. If someone steals something it "comes out" on you, and if your total reaches too high you get in trouble or lose your job. The limit is $300 per year and that can be just one incident.

There is never anyone to help out, always understaffed because everyone leaves. Managers are not allowed to make any other decision a regular employee would without consulting the HR guy.

You start as a tanning sales associate, and you can work up to "assistant manager" but... it doesn't pay anymore. You can then work up to manager... which is basically a regular worker with keys to the safe... after that, that is it. You can't go higher.

I worked at Darque Tan full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    None, besides getting discounted tanning

    Cons

The company could care less about you. They brainwash you in training to make you believe that indoor tanning is safe and even has health benefits. They teach you that it's okay to tell women that it is fine to tan if you are pregnant. They also tell you to tell customers that receiving false UV light gives you vitamin d just as the real sun does, which can decrease your chances of getting certain cancers.

You get no breaks or lunch time, it does not matter if you are working 8 or twelve hours. No breaks are allowed.

You are treated like a number, the company could care less about you. You are just a dollar sign in their eyes. If you are sick and have a doctors note, you have to find someone to cover your shift, and if you don't you are screwed and will be terminated.

I advise that no one work here, and the turn over rate is outstanding, the only people that stay there are the ones who have no spine and cannot stand up for themselves. There is a reason that there is a sign in the window that says "we are always hiring"

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Stop being jerk offs

    Pros

Opportunity to meet various people, good tanning discount. The owner really cares about his company and stays true to his company policies unlike other corporations.

    Cons

Some nights were long if you closed 11pm!!! However it wasn't too bad. You are not allowed to sit down, which I understand but after 8 or 9 hours your feet are killing you.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Upper management keep up the great work, y'all are great at motivation!! Make sure you store managers have some passion, its sad to walk into a Darque Tan with an employee who really doesn't care about the product or company who is in charge of a store.
