    Great Job...just not a career

Engineer (Current Employee) Santa Clara, CA

ProsI say its a great place for those just out of college because you get to work on intricate details of the storage domain and you learn different technologies, software methodologies, and troubleshooting skills. If you're a quick learner, this is the place for you. Also, if you're in the late stages of your career, this is a place for you because if you perform your job, you're almost guaranteed a stable pay check. There's little employee turn over.

Also, the 401k and stock options give enough incentive to tough it out at least until they vest.

ConsHowever, this is not the place to make a career out of in my opinion. There is just not enough creative leeway or space to put an individual stamp on a project. Once you learn the technology stack and troubleshooting skills, it gets boring. Those who are passed the entry level, but still haven't made a career should be careful not to pigeon hole themselves here. Just have a "backup" plan, pun intended.

Office politics tend to get the better of people here. Best to keep head down at some times.

    Miserable Place to Work

Manager (Former Employee) Santa Clara, CA

    ProsInnovative product, exceptionally smart people

ConsSenior managers were awful and only interested in making money for themselves

Advice to Senior ManagementPay attention to middle management, it contributes to the company, as well.

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company

Can't wait for my contract to expire.

Consultant (Current Employee) Santa Clara, CA

ProsCheaper food in cafeteria than past employer. Every Friday at 4:30 is ok party in cafeteria.
    Free soda.
Free workout center vis-a-vis past employer.
    Great products to work on.
OK hours for business side. 9am normal time start.

Cons2-week vacation (not including sick days) - compared to last employer with 3 weeks.
Photocopy machines lacking in work area - 2 machines per floor - have to walk half way across building.
IT Helpdesk very weak - response time very, very slow - several weeks to clear help desk ticket.
Lack of sufficient training program for new employees - training provided by giant corporate EMC in Massachuesetts.
Business-side management eats young (newer employees) - seen bad treatment of good, terminated employees
Lack of 1-on-1 or clear directions from business side management.
People there tends to rather just take paycheck than enjoy the products.

Advice to Senior ManagementBetter training materials or localized training availability in Santa Clara, rather than utilize the EMC corporate training modules.
This isn't Apple -- people aren't going crazy for these products.
Clearer directions to employees -- we cannot read your minds.

Was a good place.... not bad for this economy however.

Technical Support Engineer (Current Employee) Santa Clara, CA

ProsGreat product to support, it worked as designed. In the early days management listened to the customer and it was easy to get product marketing's time with a customer.

ConsMost of the startup culture died when EMC took over this company. IT got political really quick.

Before even the EMC buy out, management would hire their buddies from previous companies even if they were idiots.

Advice to Senior ManagementHire from within and open up the interview process. You can't hire a technical position and the interview is composed of only management.

Management will the be factor that limits this company's growth, rather than product.

Senior Director (Former Employee) Santa Clara, CA

ProsThey have a good product in the space they're in, and they're one of the few companies still hiring in the valley. There are many bright people employed in engineering who can continue to differentiate this product among others in their field. Storage is a difficult space for a new company to enter and they've managed to do this when few other companies can. People perceive they'll make money at this company which isn't something that has been seen for many years.

HR is run by many really good people who attempt to infuse their values throughout the company. That can't be said for many companies in the valley.

ConsThe company is run by a small group of insiders who don't understand business beyond thier areas of expertise. There is limited cross-company communicaiton. Management tends to hire above those who are already in place, but then ignores their input. It seems vitually impossible to penetrate into the founder's circle of influence. The company is run like a very small start-up which of course is no longer true. They created an enrivonment which speaks of work-life balance, but that is not the life of most people there. Most folks work killer hours and would leave if they could find a job. The bad economy keeps people entrenched at Data Domain.

Advice to Senior ManagementBegin to communicate to your VPs and Directors who you've brought in as "experts".

All in all, a good place to work at.

Engineer (Current Employee) Santa Clara, CA

ProsThe work is challenging and interesting. The people are smart and helpful. Work arrangements are flexible but that is probably no different than at other similar sized companies in the area.

ConsIt is still a relatively young company. The work/life balance and benefits aren't as refined as at other places in silicon valley. The more children you have, the younger they are, the more acute this realization.

Advice to Senior ManagementBe completely forthcoming about any and all decisions that affect employee's life at work. I think this area could use some improvement. Don't scrimp on minor perks. They cost relatively little but help reduce distractions and generally keep employees happy.

You can generally find better employers outside

Senior Software Engineer (Current Employee) Santa Clara, CA

Pros1. Work on new technology (de-dup disk based backup storage system). The technology is way ahead of competitors. This can be fun to work for.
    2. Some smart engineers and overall good engineering team.
    3. If you joined before IPO, it can be a reason to keep working for this company until your shares are vested or its stock tanks.

Cons1. Not much oppotunities moving up as engineers. In general, engineer managers do not talk about your personal growth too much during review or other times. They care more about getting things done. So unless you are good at kissup or very aggressive (gain favorites from certain higher level managers), your chance of promotion is slim.
    2. Mediocre compensation/benefits. There is no 401K match. Quite mediocre health benefits requiring big out-of-pocket cost and monthly premium. There is no bonus. Only recently there is yearly stock option grant (earlier on, only after almost 4 years), and amount of grant is not good.
    3. Mediocre engineering management. Senior VP almost never talks to average engineers so engineers have no idea what he is doing and he is probably has no idea what engineers are thinking. Other lower level managers seem only interested in getting their piece of work done, ignoring all other aspects of people management.

Advice to Senior Management1. Talk to engineers more (engineering department). Know what they want and address them.
    2. Don't be too stingy.
    3. Treat engineering personal growth more seriously.
