I have been working at Daugherty Business Solutions full-time

    Pros

People are great -- smart, nice and motivated. Medical benefits are top notch. Good work/life balance. Management seems to care. Local model is not just talk. Some client work is strategic and fun. Ability to have an impact. Rolling out new development center and investing in more sales.

    Cons

Not all client relationships are at high enough levels to do strategic work. But seems like we are making some progress.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep promoting from within and improving knowledge sharing.

    Horrible Client/Consultant Management

I have been working at Daugherty Business Solutions full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

You need to keep in mind that Daugherty has a very charismatic leadership team that really knows how to sell the company. They have great benefits and very competitive salaries. However, there are several drawbacks.

    Cons

First and foremost, Daugherty does a horrible job of taking care of it's consultants at their client site. With Daugherty, everything is driven by, how do we get the most people in there with little to no concern for how terribly the current consultants are being treated. The client Engagement Managers who are supposed to be taking care of the Daugherty employees at that account are very out of touch of with what is going on and need to work to improve communications with lesser titled employees.

Along with the above concern, much of the attention at Daugherty seems to go to the home office and making sure that the people working the home office are happy with little to no concern for the consultants, who actually make the money for the company. Many of the new policies and other events that go on all benefit people from the home office and not the consultants.

Another issue I have with the company is a lack of women in leadership/management roles. There are very few women in these roles and I hear the term "boys club" thrown around by other employees a lot. Definitely not something to be proud of.

One more concern regarding an HR policy is that all vacation, sick time, and holiday time is lumped together and must be accrued. So, you have to earn your holidays and sick time or you will have to "borrow" time from them.

Once you are at a client site, you are pretty much stuck there. It is very hard to move clients within Daugherty, even if you are unhappy with your current client and bring it up to their attention.

One last problem, and this is a big one, is that Daugherty claims to have a great work life balance, but in reality, they have an obscene amount of extra curricular events that you need to attend, and if you don't, it reflects poorly on your year-end evaluation. Once per quarter, you have a branch meeting, line of service meeting, and client meeting. All of which take place after hours and are usually 2-3 hours long at best. They also expect you to advantage of their many after hour learning opportunities.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    1) Engagement managers and account managers to be more in touch with what is going on at their client site.
    2) Daugherty also needs to do a better job of taking care of their current consultants. For example, expecting better working conditions and hardware, etc.
    3) Employees should not have to accrue vacation and sick days. Those should be given to you.

    Pros

I enjoy the people I work with. They are smart and ambitious....always the ability to learn from them. The Clients are local and great companies to consult. The benefits are amongst the best I've every had and the leadership team is committed to growth.

    Cons

Commute can be long and problematic. Having a second location in the northern suburbs would be nice for the development center.

Atlanta Branch headed in the wrong direction

I have been working at Daugherty Business Solutions full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Overall the people at Daugherty are great. They are experienced professionals that know their craft. They employees themselves are great and the culture is very easy to assimilate into.

    Cons

The leadership in Atlanta has changed over drastically in the last 5 months. The 6 top leaders all left at the same time to start up their own consulting firm, Aspirent, and has left the corporate leadership reaching at straws. So far their idea of fixing and righting the ship is somewhat laughable. They are reverting right back to being a staff augmentation shop where we are bidding on anything and everything just so we can "Grow". This is not what they sold to me. It's obvious to a lot of people that they are looking for "yes" men (women) to step into leadership that they can control from St. Louis. But be wary as it looks like they are firing or forcing out anyone who would object or question anything.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Encourage people to speak their minds and bring some contrasting ideas to the table. This is how ideas and organizations grow. However, if you want people to just be cheerleaders for your brand and pretend everything is ok when we are hemorrhaging from multiples lines of service and losing business left and right to our competition than please do not do a thing.

    Great consultants, low trust leadership

    Pros

    High energy
    Good staff support process
    Above average compensation
    Worked with great consultants

    Cons

    High churn, disrespectful environment
    Lack of mature leadership
Growth and revenue at any cost to their future reputation
They are looking for 'conquerors' - make sure you're ok with that before you apply

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

This company thrives because there aren't that many options in St. Louis. There seems to be a big divergence between the front line consultants (who often have great attitudes) and the company leadership (which seems primarily motivated by ego and greed). Most people seemed like they were only there for the money.

I have been working at Daugherty Business Solutions full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Great benefits and competitive compensation. Management is concerned about keeping the consultants happy. They really attempt to create a community and overcome the challenges of all the employees being displaced.

    Cons

Not really true consulting. Most of the work in Atlanta is really just staff augmentation work.
Career path is not clear. The "part time" management structure doesn't really support career growth.
Lot of ad hoc busy work. Expectation to participate on multitude of committees on your own time, but not clear value to many of these activities.
Most training available only on employee's own time with little company support.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Better training opportunities. Rationalize the committees to ensure true value proposition. Consider a professional hr person.

Former Employee - Manager in Minneapolis, MN
Former Employee - Manager in Minneapolis, MN

I worked at Daugherty Business Solutions full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

    1. Health benefits are the best.
    2. Exposure to very good employees who happen to be there for the money but you can learn a lot from them.
    3. Local model, I never traveled unless I requested to.
    4. Paid bench.
    5. Recruiters work very hard to make up for turnover.

    Cons

    1. No effective sales model to attract new clients. The Minneapolis branch is an extension of the St Louis HQ with 80% of the work being done for Express Scripts (ESI) and very few individual staff augmentation roles in Target, Best Buy, General Mills and other very volatile accounts. There is a pipeline of 100+ Minneapolis clients and nobody does anything to land a project in a new client. No projects stick and when the time comes to roll off, you are sent to ESI to avoid the bench, and then you will never have any opportunity again to find a project with a client outside ESI.
    2. Promotions and increases are inconsistent across the roles. Totally based on perception, subjective feedback and ends up being a thumbs up/down from the branch leader. If you don't get along well with the branch leader, you have no chance to grow. So you need to be political and watch your back. Lots of A players being lost because of this.
    3. The only person that cares about your career will be yourself. Managers will care about you billing every day, getting you off the bench and entering your time-sheets on time.
    4. Training model is a joke. Internal certifications that are not industry standard are useless. Also, the 2-week vacation period is a joke.
    5. As turnover continues, the candidate and employee quality will be lower every cycle and you know what happens when your entire org ends up made up of B and C players.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    1. Need real leadership in Sales, Consultant Coaching and Consultant retention.
    2. Need a working Sales model that grows existing clients and gets new ones.
    3. Need to stop the turnover.

    Pros

The corporate/HQ staff were polite, smart and friendly.

    Cons

You are given one direction or message by Daugherty leadership but there is an underlying message you are to extract from that which I found confusing and unproductive. There was a sly, untrusting feeling that I felt in the hallways, in meetings and interaction with leadership.

Many hours of effort can be spent on an initiative involving 5-10 team members to have all efforts unexpectedly halted with no understanding as to why.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Deliver clear and concise messages.
