I worked at Davidson College (More than a year)

    Pros

Lots of office camaraderie, beautiful offices and work environment, fantastic work/life balance, lots of activities, cookouts, etc.

    Cons

Some problems with "middle management," lack of engagement from senior leaders

  2. Experiences vary widely across campus

    Pros

Beautiful facilities, generally nice people, pretty good benefits (especially retirement contribution matching). Cute town.

    Cons

Hard to find your way into the many inner circles of Davidson if you are not a faculty member and/or not an alum. Communication needs a lot of work.

    Advice to Management

Value your staff and do away with the culture of hoarding information. If you are qualified enough to get a job at the college, you should be trusted enough to not be consistently denied information.

I worked at Davidson College (Less than a year)

    Pros

Always something to be done, but you are not worked like a slave. The head gardeners are quite fun to work under and if you know what you are doing you are allowed to work independently.

    Cons

Some days can be quite hot and filled with hard work, but that is expected as a grounds worker.

    Positive Outlook

I have been working at Davidson College full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

A fantastic community atmosphere. A great number of colleagues who are very competent at their jobs. An environment that challenges you to work hard and be creative. A supervisory structure that accommodates personal lives--births, deaths, etc. The amenities of working on a college campus make this an endearing place to work.

    Cons

Decision making processes can be slow. Hiring processes can be very slow. Job mobility is sometimes an issue--few opportunities to advance within a department.

    Advice to Management

Communication around campus can be difficult sometimes--hard to know what people in other silos are doing. Davidson has reached a size where it's just a bit bigger than its small-community feel, and effective communication has suffered over the past five years. Fixing that (beyond Glassdoor.com reviews) is challenging, but will greatly benefit the community at large.

I worked at Davidson College full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The fellows program provides great opportunities for recent graduates to work in various departments of the College. The people I worked with were fantastic and really facilitated a team environment. Flexible hours. Great pay for a first job out of undergrad considering the responsibilities.

    Cons

The fellow positions are only for 2 years but depending on the department there may be opportunities to move up into a more permanent position. Depending on your personality it can be difficult to transition from student to staff member. Some in higher administration will still see you as a student and not give you the respect that they may give other employees. Thankfully in my case those instances were few.

    Neutral Outlook

I worked at Davidson College part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Fantastic people in the Anthropology Department of Davidson College, flexible work hours as long as work was completed in a reasonable time. Good pay.

    Cons

Worked alone in the basement of the academic building in a relatively closed off space. Not enough room to work with and not enough specimens to get any significant research done.

    Advice to Management

    None.
