I worked at Davies Public Affairs as a contractor (less than an year)

    Pros

if you want a crash course in how the world of politics, public affairs and advocacy works, there is no better place than Davies. The CEO is a force to behold, and the staff is one and all VERY bright and professional. The vibe is casual, and people like to laugh, but there are high standards. Excellent pay and bennies.

    Cons

This could be a plus for some, a con for others - but there is very little hand-holding at Davies. You need to be self-driven and self-motivated. It can be difficult to find time with the CEO, which can be a challenge when prioritizing and/or need sign-off on things.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be sure to spend time with each and every employee to learn how to keep the firm growing and getting better.

    Pros

    Lovely little office in downtown.
    Nice, friendly staff.
    Cool work.

    Cons

Internship is more on the menial data entry and what not kind of tasks.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Include more projects for interns.

I worked at Davies Public Affairs

    Pros

DAVIES is a very good place to work for a person with a type A personality but who still enjoys free time. They are very good about making sure you can take care of personal situations if necessary. Management does its very best to make the environment fun for everyone and even the CEO/Owner is pretty friendly and approachable. You can't beat the office locations either.

    Cons

The firm is quite bad at communicating long term corporate strategy to junior staff, and the structure of the firm leaves very little chance for upward mobility. If you are looking for a place to make a career, this is not it. Those at the top are very tight knit and don't dole out promotions unless you are one of the favored few. I found it very frustrating and occassionally unfair how they played favorites. Turnover is extremely high, even for industry standards, simply because people get burned out and see that they have no future prospects.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Increasing communications with lower level staff about strategy as well as trying to have a more objective view of job performance would be critical to improve employee retention.

I have been working at Davies Public Affairs

    Pros

The people are amazing, Davies has a genuine ability to retain not only some of the greatest minds in the game but they are also very cool people socially. The work is is challenging and hours can be long but the opportunity to work together as a team and win defining issues is definitely worth the ride. Time lines can be very tight but it keeps you on your feet. If you have new ideas or skills to bring to table and can prove yourself then opportunities exist for promotion. Davies wants people to be doing what they do best and I have seen people come on board for one job and after gaining experience and being provided with opportunity their role has evolved into something completely different. The firm also has regular staff meetings and a completely open book policy and great bonus structure which was all implemented in the last two years and very appreciated by everyone. If you are smart, committed and can play hard while having fun, then Davies is a perfect place for you.

    Cons

When there is a tight deadline, the long hours can be tough if you have a young family. Although there is potential for growth Davies is still a small to mid-size firm so it can take a little longer. Davies is not for everyone, so sometimes great people leave after a year or two - but I guess that is the same everywhere. Most people in the firm however have been there for an average of 7 years or more.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Thank for keeping us in the loop with your open book policy. It means a lot to work for a firm that puts it all on the table and sticks by its employees.
