I have been working at Davis Polk full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Highly professional and brilliant lawyers across the board. Don't think you'll find any other law firm with a deeper bench and that will give associates as much responsibility so early in their careers.

    Cons

The hours can be long and communication about partnership prospects can be opaque.

As white shoe firms go, this is an above-average one to work for.

I worked at Davis Polk full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Still a lot of great people to work with, top notch facilities and technology.

    Cons

Absolutely no respect for those who don't hold law degrees. Under people are treated on par with just another office item like a stapler or laser printer. It's a completely different place from what it was in the 90's. Work product is suffering from management's desire to save pennies on the backs of the lower paid people and throw dollars out the window on attorneys who have no loyalty to the firm.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay more attention to the people who really get the grudge work done and out on time with no glorification and treat them with the respect they deserve.

I worked at Davis Polk as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

Awesome people and culture; very enjoyable experience overall. Interacted with colleagues in and out of work in the litigation department and couldn't be happier working with that group. I would recommend it highly for an internship, and while the life of associates looked difficult, the culture sounded much less stuffy and awful based on friends who spoke about working with other law firms.

    Cons

Internship was a lot of document moving, but definitely what you made of it. You could ask questions and learn a lot about what the legal industry is like and what it's like to work in it.

I worked at Davis Polk full-time

    Pros

For the most part everyone is treated respectfully and professionally. Great support services (tech support, legal assistants, secretaries, etc.).

    Cons

Certain mid level associates have a bad reputation for treating junior associates in a demeaning way. These are typically mid levels that transfer to DPW from another firm and so are used to a screamer culture. Partners and management need to step up and actively send a message that this type of attitude is not the DPW way

I have been working at Davis Polk full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

The people are great. Everyone is exceptionally smart and dedicated to their work. Some might see big law firms as being terrifying places where everyone is out to make a buck and move up the ladder and, although that may be some peoples intention, everyone is a team-player and wonderful to work with.

    Cons

I find that the firm's ability to train its' staff and incoming interns, associates, employees, etc on the technical programs and procedures of the company--which can be stifling.
