I worked at Dayton Freight part-time for more than a year

    Pros

Great starting pay at just under $16 an hour
    Top-of-the-line equipment
    Nice working conditions
Some bosses respect you, and treat you fairly

    Cons

    No advancement within company
    No seniority
    4 a.m. to 10 a.m. schedule
    Working days Tues through Sat
Bosses will play favorites with the employees
One fifteen min break for a six hour shift
Constant feeling of you are a nobody
No time to go out on weekends. Every Friday night your in bed by 9 pm
Every Saturday night you are dead tired because you have been up since 3 am working all morning

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

At Dayton you are a little dock guy, and some people there will make sure you know that. You could work there for years, and you would think you are the next in line to be hired, and they will hire a guy off the street for the job rather than give a current employee the opportunity.

I have been working at Dayton Freight part-time for more than a year

    Pros

Minimal work for maximum pay, even part timers make good money. EXTREMELY flexible with schooling, I know there are more than a few of us part-timers where I work that have to leave early for school without any repercussions.

    Cons

The hours, I work part time from 4 a.m. to 10 a.m. and getting up at 3 a.m. is extremely hard to get used to, working Saturday mornings and losing your Saturday nights is just awful. I would love for it to be a Sunday-Thursday job.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Rather than just make someone full time, host interviews for the part time guys, or at least find out if they are interested, and look at their numbers. Some of us hold very high numbers (even out-doing some of the full-time guys) and get overlooked.

I worked at Dayton Freight full-time for less than a year

    Pros

pay, lot of hours, overtime, Technology, equipment upkeep.

    Cons

mind games, brainwashing, and total disrespect! I was told I was an honest, upstanding, hardworking family man, but not Dayton freight material! Not family friendly.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop brainwashing employees with your breakfast's, dinners, and bagels! Learn to respect people for being honest! By far the worst company, I've ever worked for!

I worked at Dayton Freight full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Steady Work, Good Benefits, Weekly Paychecks, Competitive Pay, Small Office Environment. Position was pretty much a head down data entry job - could listen to music throughout shift.

    Cons

Over Emphasis on Production - Every second of your shift must be accounted for.
Long Irregular Hours - End time varied every day.
Not Much Potential For Job Advancement.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Integrate a work/life balance concept into company operations.
Encourage career advancement for internal employees.

I have been working at Dayton Freight full-time for more than a year

    Pros

I have spent several years in the Transportation industry as an Account Manager with UPS Freight and Saia. I made the decision that I no longer wanted to represent corporations that have lost site of the most important aspect of being successful, which is the customer and the employees.. Dayton Freight has instilled a culture within that continues to evolve as a leader in the industry whether it be through technology or their people internally. Benefits for Full Time employee's seem to be very competitive.

    Cons

Provide some type of benefits to part time people

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue your path as being the "Dayton Difference"

I worked at Dayton Freight part-time for more than a year

    Pros

    Flexibility, Casual Environment, decent staff

    Cons

Some members on staff were very rude and inappropriate. Management didn't investigate claims of harassment. Had to go to Corporate to get assistance.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to staff. Stop playing favorites.

I have been working at Dayton Freight full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Fast paced, fun work. Technology is awesome, equipment is great. Company experiencing sales growth.

    Cons

New generation of narcissistic management taking over. You can feel the culture shift. Management company wide are turning into mico-managers who feel they need to baby sit everyone. Good pay for part-time work and drivers. TERRIBLE pay for managers. Absolutely no retirement contribution. Benefits once paid for by the company, yeah now employees pay for it. And its expensive. At the end of the day its JUST A JOB. Not a career opportunity.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Let people do their job, STOP MICO MANAGING. Review the pay scale for management! Beef up the retirement plan and benefits. This company will sell out in 20 years OR LESS if things do not turn around soon. I have seen this over and over with 2nd generation family owned trucking companies.

Former Employee - Management Trainee Intern

I worked at Dayton Freight as an intern for less than a year

    Pros

There was much to learn about the management of people. Learned how to drive a fork lift. Helped me land a job in a similar industry. Decent pay

    Cons

Internship program was very unstructured. The industry is so time sensitive that it was very difficult to assign responsibility to an intern. I mostly found myself driving a forklift, answering phones, or just shadowing someone. Irregular hours. At first the prospect of going full time sounded great until you see the position you would be put in with a satisfactory salary but bad hours and lots of them.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Put a little more structure into the internship program.
