I have been working at DePaul University part-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

DePaul is located in a great urban environment, which makes it a great place to do research in diverse settings.

    Cons

I was there for five years as a doctoral student and taught undergraduate psych courses during my final three years there. As a student, stipends are not nearly enough to live on (less than 16k per year in 2012), resources to complete work (computers, printers, software, a desk, etc.) were scarce, and most faculty have little concern for students' progressive success. Unless you're doing their work for them, little support is offered. As an instructor, the undergraduate students appear to be running the show and diluting the quality of learning by constantly demanding 'what's going to be on the test', and very often not taking responsibility for their own learning. As a male instructor in a female-dominated field and psych department, I received little support when holding students accountable for assignments and learning. Disagreements with the lead faculty, including the Chair and Program Directors, are often met with unnecessary resistance which impede the career progress of their own graduate students. (Not only would I not recommend working there, I would not want my children to go to school there).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I wouldn't even know how to go about fixing it. And frankly, I don't care. I'm just glad to be done with the place.

    Pros

Flexible hours depending on the department and supervisor.
    Great atmosphere
Supervisors seem to care about students

    Cons

I worked at DePaul University part-time

    Pros

Absolutely loved working as a student employee throughout college. I was able to meet a lot of people which now are my close friends. Our supervisors were great and helped a lot with our professional development. They really cared and wanted us to succeed. It was great to work right on campus. The hours were easy to fit in with workload from school and extracurricular activities. They understand that you are a student first, and want you to do well academically.

    Cons

I had no negative experiences besides that I wish that I decided to find an on campus job my first year instead of waiting till the beginning of my second year.
