Burwood, New South Wales (Australia)

Current Employee – been working at Deakin University

ProsCollegial, friendly environment. Good support for early career researchers. Great potential for learning flexible and innovative teaching techniques and online teaching technologies.

ConsVery strong focus on students as consumers of education. Student satisfaction takes priority over integrity of coursework. Staff are often left feeling the are performers rather than educators.

Advice to Senior ManagementStaff often feel overworked and pressured to forego academic integrity for student comfort/contentment. It is difficult to foster initiative, perseverance etc in students.

Current Employee – been working at Deakin University

ProsFlexible workplace, fun people, work near the ocean, lots of professional development and support. There's bicycle parking and shower facilities and good use of elearning applications. There has recently been a great change at the executive level and there are some very positive changes afoot.

ConsDon't expect to get decent bonuses even if you get "outstanding" on 5 annual performance reviews. There is also great disconnect between the various central service areas. There doesn't yet seem to be any strategic direction for e-learning so making changes is hard.

Advice to Senior ManagementSet a series or aligned strategic plans please so we can make wise changes without reacting to failures.
