I have been working at Dealertrack Technologies full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Company is firmly established as a one-stop shop for automotive retailing software. Anyone who buys a car today in the US or Canada will most likely use their software or services. The company's CEO is vertical integration wizard practicing A&D (Acquire and Develop) to really deliver value to shareholders and customers. From a high-level view this company is poised for exciting growth over the next few years. The acquisition of Dealer.com should help increase the company's bottom line. Work/life balance is a great benefit of working here. The work environment is good and will get better with a new state-of-the art facility being built nearby.

    Cons

The current management system is an antique of the last century. Acquired companies get wrapped up in red tape and a lot of the company's net income has been been re-invested in non-value producing positions that increase bureaucracy and impede future growth. Generally, the company's internal management is risk averse and most people work in silos. Trust is a big issue with management describing itself as 'needs improvement but above industry average.' This is a terrible admission of settling for mediocrity. Many managers were promoted from the tech ranks and do not have proper training to be good managers. Location of the office is an issue because of it's proximity to New York City where most of the technology talent the company needs prefers to work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    1) Required reading:
a -- Eric Schmidt and Jonathan Rosenberg's book "How Google Works"
b -- Eric Ries' book "Lean Startup"
    2) Hire the best people. Take pains in doing so.
    3) Empower the best people you hire and get out of their way.
    4) Trim out waste and promote those who can lead and serve effectively.

Terrible insurance plan and pay was not proportionate to the work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I have been working at Dealertrack Technologies

    Pros

Great flex time low accountability, seems some of the acquisitions (clickmotive particular) are so lax you can get away with murder

    Cons

management (clickmotive specific) is pathetic. Seems they have no clue how to work with people unless they grew up with them or went to school with them...run, don't walk from any offer from the Dallas team. Furthermore, anyone that knows about their security breaches to their clients would divest of the stock. The fact they ignore prime PII security issues for excuses is embarrassing as well as criminal. Follow the local news story that's likely to spread on this shortly.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Grow up...put real people in place of the clickmotive clones in place. These guys have no clue about how to work with new personalities, let alone any one that challenges them

    Pros

    - Family / work balance is good
     - Ping pong, pool table, make it good for lunch breaks

    Cons

    - Benefits below average compared to other companies of similar size in the Greater New York Area (stater 17 PTO with no rollover to next year, 37% match up to 4% 401k, only HSA health plans, ...)
     - Very disorganize structure and lot of red tape in the IT side.
     - Management (middle and upper) lacks any vision, they just operate day to day.

    Pros

flexible hours for non-call center employees, half of your co-workers look like strippers, a good place to get experience and get out, clear chain of command

    Cons

half your co-workers look like strippers and are hired for thus, you're working in the auto-industry and it is very much a boys club, Mostly gay friendly but employees could use to be educated so less transphobic, the auto industry, upper management does not value employees and treats everyone as if they were in a call center, Dealer Dot Com does not value employees outside of Vermont and they are in charge now, upper management has no idea what half their employees do and only educated themselves when their junk is on the line, will pay you the industry minimums or below and expect you to thank them for it, you will never-ever-ever- transfer out of your department---unless you are about to quit, if you get a better job management will act like you have betrayed her--never mind talented people are passed over for promotions and left with leaving as the only option for advance (This isn't weird, but the "how dare you go" mentality is)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

your upper managers oversees to variable a work force - most of which they are ignorant about, don't treat non-call-center employees like call center employees, improve feeling of opportunity outside of Vermont, transition buyouts in a way that show you care about existing employees, stop acting like your employees owe you for their job-it's a give and take not give

    Pros

there are not alot of pros. you have a job and that is about all you can say

    Cons

micro managed. you have to put down every minute you work so that it adds up to 8 hours a day. you have to spend more time doing this than doing your job.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

let people just work and do their job and get off back sides and stop making people feel like they walk on egg shells. People were happy when it is fdi, it was like a family then. now all you care about is quanity, no quality. people can't live under a microscope

    Pros

Location is in Long Island. It's a job.

    Cons

Senior management does not care about their employees. Their disability policy will leave you with no pay at a time you need it the most. They know this and just don't care. Lots of distrust between employees (oh, excuse me "team members") and management for good reason. They heap piles and piles of work on your stressed out shoulders then make you participate in wellness they don't give you time to do or get financially penalized. Managers don't even know how to manage.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Start caring about your employees

    Pros

Personal Growth is a biggie. They are all about hiring from within when they can, and frankly that's how I got my position. Because of this you are afforded career growth you may not get anywhere else for the experience you have. This is major.
    Large amount of vacation time.

    Cons

Heath insurance is less than stellar, I miss my PPO plan and now just stuck with an HSA, but it get's the job done I suppose it's not terrible.
The pay could be better, especially when you look at salaries for your contemporary's in other companies. BUT this is outshined by the fact they are great for growing your carrier. Your almost better off working here for 5 years, moving up as quick as you can, getting all the knowledge and experience you can grab, then moving on for more lucrative opportunities.
NO PTO ROLLOVER is a biggie.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Allow PTO rollover or payout, when strapped with a large amount of projects it can be hard to take time off, and you wind up loosing your vacation time.

    Pros

People are great. Company is growing. The culture has gotten very lax. No real dress code as long as you don't push it.

    Cons

Company is on an acquisition tear. Potential for advancement seems harder with each acquisition b/c of role "alignment". Benefits are not as good as you would think for such a large company.
