Flexible working hours plus overtime don't make up for poor management at all levels.

One big family

Sales Assistant (Current Employee)
Dundee, Scotland (UK)

I have been working at Debenhams part-time for more than a year

ProsThe people. I would have taken other jobs during my part time employment but the colleagues I work with are great friends. Its encouraging to go to a place where people work as a team, can socialize outside work and you are respected for your hard work.

Managers and supervisors are open and honest. They also listen to suggestions. Really understanding of external commitments such as university for myself personally.

ConsAs I have found with many jobs in retail their is an underlining hierarchy that the longer a staff member is there the more authority and 'rights' they should have.

Some areas develop Cliques.

Advice to Senior ManagementNone.

I have been working at Debenhams full-time for more than 5 years

ProsGreat environment in the store, the team is like a big family. Nice stock, good variety, and interesting working in all the different departments.

ConsLong hours, fast paced, often short staffed, high expectations from senior management that can be challenging to deliver with the resources available.

I worked at Debenhams as a contractor for less than a year

ProsBrilliant staff discount, lovely staff

ConsPay isn't great. trying to open store cards is difficult

Advice to Senior ManagementFarnborough store, the decision of removing the pay kiosks from menswear was a terrible one, lines of customers now end up too long.

Expect to be expected to do things outside of your contract and knowledge!

Stock Movement (Former Employee)
Nuneaton, England (UK)

I worked at Debenhams as a contractor for less than a year

ProsGood working environment, people are nice, very straight forward and easy job, the discount card is the biggest perk of it all.

ConsFirst of all I applied to be a Xmas Temp Sales Advisor, was inducted and trained as one with the other temps but ended up being the only one placed in STOCK MOVEMENT, I found this out AFTER I was trained in something completely different!! This was frustrating and misleading, almost a con as it involved me having to work early hours and perform manual labour which I did not sign up to.

Pay is MINIMUM WAGE so that's awful, the work is brainless, unappreciated and a literal health detriment. Many times my back was aching from all the moving. I was expected to know and do many things which I had not been trained on or was outside of my contract. Such as being contracted to start at 7am but when arriving at 6:50am was frowned upon as being late and was expected to come in at 6:45am.

I wasn't given the formal training for Stock Movement until the 3rd week of my employment by which time it was a pointless as I already knew and was doing everything. My standard issue steel toe capped shoes were not given until this time either. I was expected to know where things went, the procedures and abbreviations even though I hadn't been trained, it was my first week and the manager never explained or told me what certain things meant, or it was the first time seeing or hearing of it. I was scolded by my manager for things which were not my fault but hers for not telling me what it was in the first place! E.g what CFS's were, what security labels were supposed to go on and on my penultimate shift, that stock replenishment on a pick list meant it was unavailable in the stock room.

All in all I put most of the blame for my bad experience on the line manager for expecting too much without an explanation of what it was, and not being considerate of my position as a new member.

Advice to Senior ManagementBe more considerate of your staff members and have more thorough training as the majority of the 'mistakes' people make there are due to the lack of information they receive.
