    Pros

Some great students and lower-level management. Great variety of courses for contract teachers. Small TIAA-CREF matching.

    Cons

Image conscience to the point of ethical ineptitude, terrible physical plant. Outdated Novell Email client that is unwieldy, but mandated. Antiquated notions of college education.

    Advice to Management

Build better relationships with Adjuncts. Bring faculty standards and practice into line with 21st century realities, beyond just using WebStudy. Encourage greater engagement between student and faculty, rather than discouraging it. Develop more effective real-time discussion technology to facilitate better, safer, out of class communication between faculty and students, since the sheer volume of irrelevant email in the Novell email account makes it an ineffective communication medium.

Delaware County Community College has potential, but suffers from same issues as other colleges and universities

    Pros

The College treats adjunct faculty reasonably well. There is some support for professional growth. The students are generally friendly and try to support the efforts of faculty who are working hard to provide quality instruction to them.

    Cons

Compensation is comparable to other comparable colleges. Ability to advance into full-time faculty positions seems highly limited. As the economy plunged, the ranks are filled by huge numbers of adjuncts rather than hiring full time faculty. Many adjuncts are great--some are warm bodies in the classroom. Without plans to balance the numbers better, students will ultimately suffer the costs of this. This, however, is not a problem of just DCCC but a growing problem at many colleges and universities throughout the county

    Advice to Management

Stop making some many bureaucratic positions in administration and focus on finding room for more full-time faculty.

    Pros

Pleasant work environment. Generally free to teach according to own methods. Approximately $850 per credit hour of teaching, or $2550 for three credit class if part time instructor.

    Cons

None other than pay could be more competitive to state college for adjunct instructor.

    Pros

I love and respect my department managers. They work with me to fit their requirements of me into their schedule, and they are gracious about recognizing their employees' work.

    Cons

The college recently brought in a new HR director who changed the temporary employee policies. Veteran department temps who have earned the privilege of choosing their shifts have been forced basically to reapply for their jobs. Their hours are being given to new people who don't know the systems or procedures. In the past, I could have counted on at least 20 hours per month--now I'm worried that I'll receive even 10 hours.

    Advice to Management

I understand the need of a new director to come in and immediately "make rain," but why did the new HR director feel the need to change the temporary employee policies without at least examining the system currently in place?
