I worked at Delaware North full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

My contributions were recognized and I received several promotions during my time with Delaware North. It's an exciting industry - I was able to travel to some pretty cool locations including major sporting venues and casinos. I was happy with my pay and benefits. I was eligible for the yearly bonus added several years ago for some employees if the company met certain financial goals. I also enjoyed working in downtown Buffalo.

    Cons

I felt my department was underfunded the past couple of years, including lack of any type of training budget. Many personnel decisions were made which didn't make sense and contributed to morale problems. There were reorganizations every 18 months but I felt it was like rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic. Hours were very long and expectations were very high.

    Pros

I hated it from Day 1.

    Cons

I worked for the DNC Legal Department for six months and experienced nothing but bullying and harassment while working for the senior legal counsel at that time. He was one of the most horrible people I have ever met. It was such a negative experience that I left the legal field for over four years. It has been over 15 years since I worked there and it still has an impact on me.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Pros

Nice people, fun atmosphere. Many growth opportunities for those who work hard and are willing to arrive early, and stay late.

    Cons

Sometimes the compensation was less than desired, a company that practices middle of the road compensation for sure.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Recognize your strong associates and give them a reason to stay.

    Pros

Discounts, ok benefits, ok time off

    Cons

Too many "bosses", some co-workers are geared more towards their own star shining with no concern to others, paying $35 per week to park

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I have been working at Delaware North full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Company is involved in various areas of hospitality that can be exciting and fun to work.

    Cons

The senior leadership team is horrible, so much politics that it explains why little progress is ever made to really grow the company. The company allows and enables senior leaders to be bullies in the workplace and to manage employees through intimidation. That style of management went out with the 80's so the company is drastically behind the times. You would think that a hundred year old company would be stable but way too many examples exist of senior leaders using reorganization as a way to get rid of those managers who dare speak up about the bad behaviors exhibited by senior leaders. There is no concrete strategic vision for the company so as hospitality becomes more and more competitive, this company is likely to get left in the dust.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The chairman should retire and let his sons take over, perhaps they'd have a more contemporary leadership style. Get rid of the entire senior leadership team and start over. Hold leaders accountable to being effective leaders and don't tolerate those who use bullying and scare tactics as leadership styles. Stop talking about how the company has family values, integrity and honesty and walking the talk -- require this of every single manager and leader in the company and don't settle for less.

I worked at Delaware North as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

This company has world-wide locations. They are rapidly their Parks & Resorts division/ expanding so there may be opportunities for people who want to work at those specific units.

    Cons

Middle management people at corporate are not perceptive to constructive criticism. On my last day my manager did not say thank you for my extremely hard work or even say goodbye. After leaving, at least two other people from my department also quit. They had me perform extremely remedial tasks. When I asked questions from the person training me I was told that the answer was "...not important for (me) to know because (I) am only an intern and there is no time to teach these things?" Such a disappointment. Low brand recognition. Low upward mobility. Toxic culture.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice
