    Advice to Management

evaluate leadership for actual leadership qualities, most are not leaders but managers

I have been working at Dell full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

I feel like a valued employee. I have a great deal of autonomy and flexibility in how I approach my job. The compensation is more than competitive. I am treated with a high degree of respect and I feel that my opinions matter.

    Cons

Like many large companies, we sometimes get bogged down in the minutia.

    Advice to Management

Keep us growing and continue to look at new business acquisitions and markets that will help us grow.

I have been working at Dell full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Good for work life balance and the pay is pretty decent. Coworkers are generally cheerful and great to work with.

    Cons

No upward mobility, going the way of Indian heritage firms. There has been a lot of changes and turnover in management over the past 10 years. Reorgs are constant about every 9-18 months.

    Advice to Management

More internal promotions instead of always hiring from the outside and cut down on the constant reorgs.

I have been working at Dell full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Dell services is an organization inside of Dell. It is an attempt by Dell to emulate a hardware+services model of HP and IBM. They are well funded and supported by a well established brand.

    Cons

There are massive hierarchies and absolutely no projects. people just sit and make PPTs all the time. Massive hierarchies ensure that there is 200% bureaucracy for every small thing and nothing ever gets done. In the organization, for every 1 person who works there are 10 "coat wearing" executives who just steal PPTs and present them. Other than hot air the organization produces nothing.

    Advice to Management

Time to do a bottoms up reorganization in the services division because its simply wasting money.

I have been working at Dell full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Dell offers you a chance to do your job as if it was your own business. No micro-managing.

    Cons

If you are in Sales, the quotas are high and it's hard to hit a "home run".

    Advice to Management

Continue the great management style, but give Sales a chance to "hit it big" on occasion.

I have been working at Dell full-time

    Pros

I was there for 15 years so they did something right

    Cons

Reduction in force was grossly mismanaged. Promises made that they did not live up to. Very poor communication. Corporate goals ineptly redefined every 3-9 months.

    Advice to Management

If you're going to lay-off US employees in favor of cost saving offshore resources, bring the offshore people online for 30 days along with the people they'll be replacing. It allows those being let go (each with 10+ years of experience) to seek other opportunities within the company, ramps up the new force, and doesn't leave in-a-bind the services and sales people who are being supported. Everyone let go was a seasoned professional, surely there were roles available for the talent.
