Pros
Mentorship aspect of the job was a great asset along with the opportunities to grow within the community was particularly strong.
Cons
Sometimes you feel like you're a number in the company which is so big in size, and also it takes a while to adjust with the computer side.
Pros
Fun, some of the people
Cons
Silo'd organization that does not utilize it's people
Advice to Senior Management
Be aggressive and get some new business
Pros
My department is very flexible with time off, or working from home, when possible. I know a lot of people who are able to telecommute or work part-time to meet their family's needs. I also feel like there is a lot of positive energy, and most people seem pretty satisfied with DFS.
Cons
I support a sales team, so sometimes they call me with their hair on fire for some emergency. It can be very frustrating to work in that kind of environment, where there are multimillion dollar decisions that have to be made in half an hour, and you have no way of prepping for them, or knowing that they are coming.
Advice to Senior Management
I think that communication could improve - sometimes we get information in a round about way, instead of trickling down. Also, sometimes when Dell has certain programs going on that affect employees, we don't receive follow-up information from DFS management.
Pros
Work life balance is very good. You usually are pretty flexible. The company feels young. It has a refreshing casual feel. It can feel like a cool place to work. You have a chance to make impact on the business and see results. You can expect to get great benefits (though those have worsened) and great vacation time. The DELL perks are also very good.
Cons
The management is incompetent. They are racist, sexist and very much a good boys club. They lean on employees and most of them do nothing. Good luck getting promotions and credit for what you do. Unless of course you drink or play golf with the right people.
Advice to Senior Management
All of you should quit.
Pros
The people who work at Dell are top notch (senior management excluded). Dell also provides great work-life balance.
Cons
DFS management just doesnt care about any of the employees. They announced a "strategic assesment" and let 200 (some core) employees leave. None of them realized that a sub-prime meltdown may not be the best time to see a financial services company. The middle management is constantly fighting for position. Senior management seems to think these people have value, but they really just get in the way. The company would be far better off if the management allowed people to do their jobs and just backed them up when things were hectic.
Advice to Senior Management
All the Senior Management needs to be let go. They are only there to collect huge paychecks and play golf on Fridays. Same as every other company, but it needs to change. My first two bosses cared a lot about employees. The last one could care less. Didn't even want to talk when I left the company.
Pros
Depending on the department, the work can be fascinating and intellectually challenging.
Cons
Job security. Dell management is reviewing "strategic ownership alternatives" for DFS.
Advice to Senior Management
Forge better cross-organizational relations and communication with Dell.
Pros
Benifits are the only reason.
Cons
back stabing all the damn time.
Advice to Senior Management
go away
Pros
The team mates are fantastic. The management staff is very fun at times but when it's time to get down to business, they become mute. The benefits are good, time off requests are typically approved and fairly reviewed. DFS definetly has it's moments to shine...if you are there at the right time/right place.
Cons
It's owned by Dell; when Dell gets dragged through the mud, we do too. Another down side is the competency of the management staff. Most of the managers/supervisors have never been in this type of environment before. Without a knowledge of how this industry works, how do you expect a company to succeed???Also, communication is a HUGE problem. For so long, people would say how the 'rep' would not speak to each other and be very territorial about their job...now, it's impossible to hold a conversation with any member of managment b/c they are all bickering with each other and 'jumping ship'....There is no communication at all!
Advice to Senior Management
Take a closer look at those who are working for you. Compensate the ones who pretty much do your job and let you take credit for it. Sit down and see exactly what it takes to get things done. Maybe then you can understand the importance of RETAINING TALENT!
