    Pros

The breadth and depth of experience cannot be beat, assuming you're under a strong Director/Sr. Manager lead on a good project.

    Cons

If you become 'pigeon holed' it may be hard to break into the area you wish to pursue.

    Advice to Management

For folks with families/strong home lives, project culture is more important than home office culture.

    Pros

Independent learning and ability to come and go as you please.

    Cons

Very unorganized. The company and location I worked at had many affairs between upper management and employees. There was no training and the staff was very rude. There was no advancement unless you devoted everything you had to working long hours, working multiple projects and very harsh criticism. I was looking forward to advancing to a bigger company outside of Colorado and working for Deloitte headquarters and voiced that to my superiors and was shot down. The office here in Colorado is very unprofessional and tough to get employment advancements.

    Pros

Flexible, good people, interesting areas of work, good amount of PTO

    Cons

    Compensation, travel, it's a day-job and a night-job (which isn't reflected in compensation)

    Advice to Management

Deloitte offers good opportunities for personal growth (e.g., trainings, interaction with clients' C-suite, experience practitioners, etc.). Flexibility and life-work balance are key--note the ordering life then work and not the other way around. Monetary compensation is lacking compared to peers and industry jobs. At a certain point top-talent will no longer be satisfied with the Deloitte name as compensation (i.e., the monetary portion must keep pace with peers).

    Pros

Free lunches once a week maybe . Flexible hours. They give you a sweet development enviornment(macbook, thunderbolt, etc)

    Cons

Less pay. Extremely poor employee retention. They will fire you even if they dont assign you any work . Favoritism with the managers so new guys will never get to be on a project. Senior management lies to your face. All the managers want to look out for themselves before they even start to care for the engineer. Benefits are horrible (i actually think non-existent though) . Engineers are treated with zero respect. Career growth is non-existent here. You are expected to go and beg the managers for months before you are even assigned some work to do.

    Advice to Management

Stop lying. Stop hiring. Stop wasting other people's time. Least you can do is not "indirectly" let people go for something not even their fault.

    Pros

Brand Name, PTO, subsequent job opportunities

    Cons

long hours, hard deadlines, high turnover and inexperienced staff

    Advice to Management

Pay more to retain staff. Experienced staff can do things twice as fast, which will make everything cost less, even if you are paying them more. Also, make sure that the metrics that you are using to measure success actually mean what you think they mean. For example, the recent focus on rate per hour has been nonsensical. It means that it makes more sense for me, as a senior, to do the work and not to bother teaching a first year. I don't think that that is what you want to have happen. In a couple years, these untaught first years will be inexperienced seniors. However, this is happening more and more to keep the rate per hour at the desired level.

    Pros

    Great training, high caliber professionals

    Cons

Cubicals, lock-step path to advancement, must commit 4-6 years before seeing any real responsibility

    Advice to Management

Increase fluidity of advancement opportunities. Reward high performers with promotions and/or more significant bonuses. Get rid of the cubicals. And if you want less turnover, stop paying $50,000 salaries.

    Pros

Easily one of the most effective ways to jump-start your career. Work with the brightest of the bright. Excellent compensation.

    Cons

Difficult to manage work-life balance if career success is not the top priority for an individual. Extremely high travel.

    Advice to Management

As this is a service-oriented business, placing even greater weight on the feedback process (whether vertical, horizontal, or outside-in) will yield incredible results.

    Pros

You will touch a lot of different types of projects, ranging from individuals up to provision and consulting/proposals. They are always bringing new clients in so you always stay busy. If you find an advocate at the senior manager/ partner level then you will always get their work for better or worse.

    Cons

Outside of a couple senior managers, management is either distant, don't know the answers to your questions, or unwilling to guide you. This means the role of manager, detail reviewer, substantive reviewer, and a lot of the times preparation falls on you. Which with the high turnover, most of my engagements were brand new to me. Turnover in experienced staff is and seniors is very high so no one below you is ever on the engagement for two years in a row. Unless it is a staff from India which you will essentially be preparing the project yourself.

    Advice to Management

Help your seniors out. Don't make them manage a project when they are new on the engagement and have no team under them. And don't disappear for days because they are going to have questions. Also one word emails are never the best answer.
