    Audit Senior

    Audit Senior (Current Employee)
    Denver, CO

ProsBrand Name, PTO, subsequent job opportunities

Conslong hours, hard deadlines, high turnover and inexperienced staff

Advice to Senior ManagementPay more to retain staff. Experienced staff can do things twice as fast, which will make everything cost less, even if you are paying them more. Also, make sure that the metrics that you are using to measure success actually mean what you think they mean. For example, the recent focus on rate per hour has been nonsensical. It means that it makes more sense for me, as a senior, to do the work and not to bother teaching a first year. I don't think that that is what you want to have happen. In a couple years, these untaught first years will be inexperienced seniors. However, this is happening more and more to keep the rate per hour at the desired level.

    Just don't stay too long

    Tax Senior Associate (Former Employee)
    Denver, CO

    ProsGreat training, high caliber professionals

ConsCubicals, lock-step path to advancement, must commit 4-6 years before seeing any real responsibility

Advice to Senior ManagementIncrease fluidity of advancement opportunities. Reward high performers with promotions and/or more significant bonuses. Get rid of the cubicals. And if you want less turnover, stop paying $50,000 salaries.

Great opportunity coupled with incredible experience-gaining potential. Lifestyle limitations included.

    Audit Assistant (Former Employee)
    Denver, CO

ProsEasily one of the most effective ways to jump-start your career. Work with the brightest of the bright. Excellent compensation.

ConsDifficult to manage work-life balance if career success is not the top priority for an individual. Extremely high travel.

Advice to Senior ManagementAs this is a service-oriented business, placing even greater weight on the feedback process (whether vertical, horizontal, or outside-in) will yield incredible results.

    No guidance for development

    Tax (Current Employee)
    Denver, CO

ProsYou will touch a lot of different types of projects, ranging from individuals up to provision and consulting/proposals. They are always bringing new clients in so you always stay busy. If you find an advocate at the senior manager/ partner level then you will always get their work for better or worse.

ConsOutside of a couple senior managers, management is either distant, don't know the answers to your questions, or unwilling to guide you. This means the role of manager, detail reviewer, substantive reviewer, and a lot of the times preparation falls on you. Which with the high turnover, most of my engagements were brand new to me. Turnover in experienced staff is and seniors is very high so no one below you is ever on the engagement for two years in a row. Unless it is a staff from India which you will essentially be preparing the project yourself.

Advice to Senior ManagementHelp your seniors out. Don't make them manage a project when they are new on the engagement and have no team under them. And don't disappear for days because they are going to have questions. Also one word emails are never the best answer.

    Poor creative environment

    Engineer (Current Employee)
    Denver, CO

ProsGood pay, benefits, 25 days off, various corporate perks. Senior engineering department is strong.

Cons- Projects led by managers with little/no background in creative or digital work. Most come from suit & tie consulting backgrounds and have no idea what they're selling to clients

    - National creative director implementing "design then ship to India" for cheap engineering at Mumbai office

    - Projects selected on meeting profit margins rather than healthy, stimulating challenges

    - Recruitment blatantly hiring for numbers, not quality of employees

    - Observed many people leave out of boredom (sit on the bench for months) or pure frustration (not doing work they were told in interview)

Advice to Senior ManagementStop hiring subpar talent & management. You're bleeding quality people because you're not giving people quality projects to grow on. Setting career goals as a mobile engineer (and other disciplines) is seemingly pointless because you're forcing people to work on HTML/front-end work and not bringing in mobile projects.

    Good Company

    Senior Consultant (Current Employee)
    Denver, CO

    Pros-nice pay and great benefits
-travel and up front client work
-mix of great leaders and a few really bad leaders

Cons-long hours, had a few consistent 90 hour weeks here and there
-you can be successful with no talent or experience as long as you play politics

Great place to jump start a career... jump in and get out fast

    Business Technology Analyst (Current Employee)
    Denver, CO

ProsFast paced work environment, higher than average caliber coworkers, good pay and benefits.

ConsWork-life balance non-existent, projects frequently undersold forcing newer employees to work 7-day weeks, often 70+ hours to make up for the difference. The phrase "Well, we did all pick consulting" is used by upper management often to excuse all kinds of unreasonable work practices. Being in professional services means that you never get overtime, and you don't get bonuses either until you've been with the firm for a while.

Advice to Senior ManagementYou have some of the best talent in the world coming in, yet your business practices towards new hires show some of the most disdain I've seen in the consulting world. Your business is nearly 100% incompatible with living a life outside of work, either fix that or stop parroting about work life balance or you'll continue to see awful retention rates.
