Pros
There are any different opportunities for growth. The Company has a very fast learning curve. It is a fast paced environment. Team oriented.
Cons
Downsides include compensation compared to the hours worked. The performance evaluation process is very political and individuals working on higher profile jobs earn better ratings. As a senior auditor it is very difficult to dictate what jobs you will be placed on.
Advice to Senior Management
Overall, I think Deloitte is a great firm to start your career. Unfortunately do the recent economic events, there have been headcount reductions and minimal compensation increases. With added responsibility and no raise it is very difficult to keep employee moral up and retain talent.
Pros
Opportunities for training
Plenty of On-the-job experience very quickly
Quick to hand out large areas of responsibility to young staff
Cons
There are several fundamental challenges with working at Deloitte which can be a blessing or a curse depending on your personality and your ambitions. They include:
-No room for challenging the status-quo (keep your ideas for your team and firm improvement to yourself),
-If you are the entrepreneurial type this is not the inspiration you’re looking for,
-If you think you will be recognized for working harder than others, you will not,
-If you think you will be compensated according to industry averages or based on merit, you will be let down,
-As mentioned on other accounting sites, the firm is short staffed, Partners over promise to their clients, and team members are underpaid,
-If you’ve heard about a work-life balance, be warned that that means sacrificing a life for work with no prospects of one
Advice to Senior Management
Realize that just because the firm has been around for as long as it has doesn't mean you can’t run it into the ground today. Management's lack of connection with the rest of the firm is causing a serious cultural riff and all of the promising talent is leaving for more pay and a better work environment.
Pros
Deloitte has many things to offer its employees. Been there for over 10 years and am very happy working there.
Cons
Probably pay is not so good. Raises for the past couple years have been very flat and not very comparable.
Advice to Senior Management
Look at the quality of work being done, not so much the quantity of hours and participation in non-work related projects.
Pros
The brand name, training, benefits, paid time off.
Cons
Long hours, thankless at times
Advice to Senior Management
Not everyone places job as the #1 priority in their life
Pros
Working on mulit-billion dollar clients, great opportunity to learn.
Cons
There is not work-life balance.
Advice to Senior Management
Improve on the work-life balance.
Pros
-great place to start career
-lots of holiday and vacation time
-ability to work with many different people
-fun team environment
-some projects with fun travel perks
Cons
-politics in review process
-disconnect between partners and staff
-lack of recognition for hard workers (everyone above takes credit for what you do)
-once you finish your second year as a staff, the return on further hardwork and learning is consistently decreased with the lack of rewards provided (not worth it to work harder to make less and stress more)
Advice to Senior Management
managers and partners that show their teams they care evoke the most motivation and loyalty from staff. with the drastic decrease in perks we're getting now compared to what levels above had, providing signs of geniune appreciation and recognition of a job well done is an easy fix that's often overlooked.
Pros
You will progress each year at Deloitte, the growth is endless and addicting because as long as you stay you know exactly when and to what position you will be promoted. In private industry depending on the company it can become stagnant.
Additionally you will learn a lot about companies, by auditing all their financials. Great foundation to start with.
Cons
You will have no life, don't know if you realistically can work here longer than 4 years if you want to have a family or a relationship that doesn't end in a break up or divorce.
You can leave basically whenever you want for a minimum 20% salary increase going into private because you are so underpaid
Advice to Senior Management
Give your employees a life, it would lead to exceptional talent sticking around much longer than they currently do.
Pros
exposure to all the resources available to a big 4.
Cons
can often get pigeon-holed, can feel lost in the herd
Advice to Senior Management
leadership at deloitte is satisfactory, it's really a hit or miss with things like this
Pros
You will learn an incredible amount in a very short period of time. The people are amazing and the networking opportunities are amazing. Five weeks of paid time off isn't bad either if you can find the time to take it.
Cons
Hours are horrible and the pay is even worse. The firm was hit hard by the recession and morale is at an all time low.
Advice to Senior Management
Increase pay to be at least close to previous levels otherwise your best people are going to leave, maybe not because they want to but because they have to to make ends meet.
Pros
Learning opportunities, knowledge sharing and collaborative culture, resources available within a large firm, coaching and mentoring, great leaders
Cons
Can be highly political, high-performing culture is demanding, lack of work-life balance, partnership model makes it difficult to attain high ranks, pay not as commensurate w/other consulting firms and industry positions
Advice to Senior Management
Ease up on firm contributions for high acheiving value drivers, be more transparent regarding compensation
