I have been working at Deloitte full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Good opportunity for fast career progression who can devote their time and effort for work only. People who are good in making network will see success.

    Cons

Work - Life balance could be a major issue. Demand for firm activities on the top of client work may cause performance issue as well as unbalance work-life.

I have been working at Deloitte full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Variety of projects, co-worker's talent, huge focus on development and growth, opportunities to lead and create, supportive community and co-workers

    Cons

As with all organizations, challenges with year-end/rating/compensation processes and making them "fair", work-life balance can be an issue for many people, easy to get pigeon-holed into one practice/project.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Raise the bar for non-standard talent hiring (e.g. direct-hire consultants, specialists), and allow more flexibility on project types as needed.

I have been working at Deloitte full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

All the great things (talented co-workers, excellent learning opportunities, a culture promoting innovation and hard work, etc.) you would expect from a solid management consulting firm

    Cons

    1. Messy leadership structure - not sure who is in charge of what.

    2. Top-heavy org structure: some stats to share - 8 partners and 2 senior managers share the credit for a project run by 1 manager supported by 2 senior consultants and 2 consultants.

    3. A flawed performance evaluation process based on mis-aligned performance metrics

     - Way too much weight is placed on firm activities, which in most cases add minimal, if any, value to the firm/people other than creating extra stress to the staff.

    - Top performance in client services is not properly rewarded - even if bringing in a full year's worth of client business as a SC/Manager would not qualify you for a 1 or 2 rank at the year-end unless you have done something (supporting his/her internal initiatives which may be low value-adding to begin with) for the decision makers.

     - It all depends on how your performance is presented: Ironically, even if a consultant had organized a high-profile and successful internal event, if his/her counselor didn’t present him/her well at the year-end review meeting, he/she wouldn’t be rightfully recognized either.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Do what you would advise a client - align performance evaluation process/metrics with the value proposition of the firm, i.e., creating measurable value to the client, which subsequently brings in both and follow-on business.

I worked at Deloitte full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Their technology is one of the best out of Big 4, giving you an ability to work from home on occasion. They have great training program that give you exposure to not only your own service area but other types of work as well. Smart people to work with. The experience from here will continue to apply to future jobs.

    Cons

There is no work-life balance. The performance review process was lacking in depth discussion on what you did and did not do well, how you can improve, what else you want to do. The company-wide meeting is more of propaganda then actual learning experience and felt like waste of time when you are busy.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Sometimes, what you preach is not what you do. Whatever policy/culture you want to implement need to be evaluated at each department level and make sure that is really happening. Otherwise, keep up the good work with training.

    Pros

Many client relationships, good culture, many mentors are available on nearly any topic. Internally you have access to great training and resources.

    Cons

The firm believes New York is the center of the world. As a west coast employee, a lot of travel is necessary for advancement.

    Pros

Friendly work environment. Some flexibility to work from home occasionally. Lots of room for growth within the company and fair compensation.

    Cons

Long hours, answering to multiple bosses (can be good or bad depending on who they are), expectation to be available at all times, pressure to meet certain client service hour goals.
