Pros
Challenges, great people, felxibility, good opportunities, diversity
Cons
long work hours, less pay
Advice to Senior Management
increase pay
Pros
The compensation is above average, the work is interesting and the people are good to work with. There are many avenues for information as long as you are willing to search.
Cons
The benefits, 401k match and medical is below par having come out of industry where the benefits were excellent comparitively.
Advice to Senior Management
The firm is very difficult to navigate and for a new employee entering at a senior level there is very little support - rethink your experienced hire program.
Pros
Advising some of the world's top companies.
Great compensation package and Benefits
Great educational opportunities
Development of Intellectual Capital encouraged
Cons
The economy has made the bonus component of compensation less than stellar
the best people should expect to travel substantially
Advice to Senior Management
Continue to encourage growth and learning opportunities
Pros
great work environment, dedicated, motivated, helpful, and friendly people, available knowledge and learning resources, networking opportunities, work-life balance, variety of practices
Cons
structured environment due to making a large firm feel smaller, limited interaction with people outside your project group, resistance to mobility within firm
Advice to Senior Management
Engage staff and interns at lower levels so that they are able to get to know you and put personal recognition to your name and face. It makes people feel that the work group is even smaller.
Pros
1) People! Phenomenally smart.
2) Travel perks are on par with the industry
3) Have to say this again, people. Some of the ones I met are still good friends and will continue to be long after i left the firm
Cons
1) Partners have very poor visibility to actual on the ground performance and mostly go with what the manager/senior manager has to say about you.
2) Very poor support processes/HR team. After having worked for two of the big four, a manufacturing firm and an Indian IT shop I know things can be better. Especially for a company of such repute
3) Work life balance is non existent. 80 hours and you are a slacker. You fall sick working, then you are doing a good job
Advice to Senior Management
1) Be open to come down to the ground level and assess situations, especially when they are going bad. This goes to the senior managers and partners.
2) Be transparent in your approach towards your staff.
My experience so far, not only would I not recommend the firm, I also would not let this firm compete in contracts with the firms I work for.
Pros
Opportunities to learn , although it may be tough to convince your incompetent boss to apply your knowledge to everyday problem. The team is good, but management is rather incompetent in their decision making.
Cons
There is no valid reason to waste time at Deloitte. You can get the same money or better elsewhere and you will enjoy the work more elsewhere. I have been in software industry 28 years and never in my life I had such an incompetent boss.
Advice to Senior Management
Try to learn respect your sub-ordinate as human beings. They have families too and they would like to enjoy some time with their families.
Pros
Skills development and learning; oppurtunity to work with smart folks; awesome to network with industry folks
Cons
Good luck dealing with the internal political culture; below average salaries and bonuses compared to industry; experienced hires have mixed feelings about the firm; feels like high school all over again!
Advice to Senior Management
Pay us approriately and you'll see a decrease in attrition!
Pros
Deloitte offers you great learning and fantastic exposure to unique client challenges across industries.
Cons
Deloitte hired, failed to train and integrate thousands of lateral, experienced industry hires over the past few years. As a result, many of us have been pushed around by those who grew up at the firm hearing that there is "one way" of doing things and reprimanded when we offer an external, industry point of view. The New York office culture can be exclusionary and cliquey, which ultimately dictates one's projects assignments, evaluations and career path.
The amount of time I spend on average working on client work vs. dealing with internal nonsense is about 70/30, respectively.
Advice to Senior Management
Rather than refreshing the strategy every year, evaluate the current to determine what's working and what's not (and more importantly who's not.) Place more value on client relationship skills and ability vs. PowerPoint formatting and you might actually have a firm full of well-rounded consultants.
Pros
Reputation and ability to advance.
Cons
Upper management did not communicate well with staff.
Advice to Senior Management
Be more open in communications with staff.
Pros
It can depend on the team but overall I find the firm flexible and reasonable. There are times when you have to work a lot (i.e. busy season) but this is generally balanced by slower times when the work load is lighter. As you move up, there are a number of opportunities to work on a variety of projects and clients. The firm also provides opportunities lead teams early in your career.
Cons
The compensation spread as you move up can be discouraging (i.e. is he really making that much more doing the same job?!). This isn't as true at the lower levels but it does hit later. Also the sales goals that start at the manager level are intimating.
Advice to Senior Management
I would appreciate more training around sales and client development in a live setting (e-learning just doesn't provide the interactive atmosphere needed for the topic).
