    Pros

    * Resume builder (it is a 'big 4' firm after all)
    * Staff and seniors are generally, although not always, a young group of fun hardworking people
    * Structured career progression (vs. industry)
    * Depending on how many clients you have, you're not necessarily stuck at one place with the same group of people all year. So you get nice little changes of environment every few months or so (although that starts to go away at the Senior level)
    * Vacation time is great. And you're able to use all of it, in the Portland office anyways.
    * Hours during the summer are good. Not too busy.
    * Portland office is a good size (big yet small) so you get to know most everyone
    * Client base is diverse

    Cons

    * You definitely feel like a resource/body to be used by those above you sometimes
    * Management is not interested in creating a work environment for people to stay long term. Staying beyond 1-4 years is crazy even for someone who loves auditing and has great clients and support systems. It takes a super ambitious person who is willing to put up with a lot of downsides to stick it out and management is not interested in improving any of those downsides. From talking with my friends at other firms, this is pretty consistent across public accounting in general.
    * Pay is low and you can leave at almost every level for much higher pay for lower hours. Deloitte was the lowest paying of the larger firms in my city and raises/bonuses were poor.
    * Work-life balance during a big chunk of the year is awful
    * Audit Quality and Audit efficiency are conflicting goals. So you often end up in no-win situations where there is really nothing you can do to make your partner/manager happy.
    * People eat time all of the time. Managers/Partners know but don't really care and reduce budgets every year and then hold staff to those budgets.
    * Office politics
    * It feels like a pretty thankless job

    Advice to Management

    Relieve pressure on staff by staffing engagements appropriately and increasing unattainable budgets.

    Pros

    Lots of good training and exposure to many industries and different businesses. Easy to transfer to certain locations. So far my time on the west coast seems a little more laid back than the east coast however I have yet to go through a busy season.

    Cons

    We are salaried and are not paid enough for the hours we work in busy season--probably my biggest issue with the job is the salary. The self evaluations are probably the most annoying thing to complete and seem like a waste of time.

    Train your staff specifically on how to sell work and create proposals, Be on the front end of pursuing and winning clients rather than waiting for clients to come to you.

    1 ) Incomparable visibility into the internal workings of a variety of companies
    2 ) Possibilities for rapid advancement compared to other similar career options
    3 ) Post-employment clout given experience at a "Big-Four" firm

    Cons

    1 ) Compensation is not in line with the time/effort required and expected of employees both on a regional basis within the same firm and as compared to similar job opportunities with other firms
    2 ) Tendency is to treat people as a means to an end and the performance feedback loop leaves a lot to be desired

    Advice to Management

    Make feedback meaningful and make it possible for someone to stand out and be recognized for their abilities without having to cow-tow, resort to disingenuity, and eat hours in order to meet minimum expectations (even if the individual is more than sufficiently competent).

    Lots of opportunity to develop yourself (skills, etc.), move laterally, work on 'headline' projects

    Cons

    You are the resource (it's a people business) which can be unsettling, you will have to travel (which doesn't work with kids).

    Advice to Management

    Fix the eval process to reduce favoritism; it suffers from compartmentalized myopia.

    - High potential for learning tax technical skills

    - Pay is not commensurate with opportunties at other companies/firms, especially when number of hours are factored in

    - Leadership at Deloitte tends to be fairly strong; however, retention is difficult due to long hours and pay that is not competitive

    learn a lot, looks good on a resume. although tough you learn rigor and how to put in extra hours

    awful benefits and low pay. long hours at times

    it is a revolving door of junior people. you could keep more experienced people if you engaged them more. once you rioll off a client that manager doenst keep an active interest, so you dont feel like you have a true mentor or someone fighting for you

    Pros

    The acquired knowledge from on the job experience is priceless. There are few jobs that develop a sense of autonomy, critical thinking, and problem solving, as an exposure to the overall audit process. It also provides a unique chance to interact with businesses and industry leaders. Networking opportunities abound.

    Cons

    While there are programs in place at the national level to encourage a good work life balance, it is difficult to always maintain a good perspective because of the nature of the work. "Busy Season" (October - March/April) is not conducive to a healthy personal life because of work expectations and demands.

    Advice to Management

    A good work/life balance needs to be continually emphasized in order to ensure retention of the best and brightest within Deloitte.
