I have been working at Deloitte full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Pay is pretty good. Team is very competent, you don't have to pick up the slack for others.
The office culture is very good and it has a good diversity programme.

    Cons

There is a relatively rigid promotion structure. There is also significant variation in worker experience depending on the department/service line that you are in.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Relax rules relating to speed and timing of promotions

    Pros

The only real pro is having Deloitte on your cv.

    Cons

Deloitte private generally start you at a level below you are currently working at. This enables them to pay you at a lower wage but you will be expected to work at the level above which you were employed. Deloitte staff are overworked due to them undercutting the competitors in the market due to paying staff low wages. Wages overed include superannuation which again undercuts people. Work life balance is horrendous and polirics is crazy within the firm. Stay well clear !

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please sort out the politics in the firm, Pay staff better and stop taking advantage of those coming from Europe by paying them low wages compared to market rate.

I have been working at Deloitte full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Deloitte has a genuine direction, and is improving every day. The real top dogs are very serious about making it a seriously good place to work.

    Cons

Deloitte is desperately trying to move away from its reputation as the “sick puppy” of the big four, however there are still too many residual managers from its darker days, and the hangover from a once toxic culture remains. Many of the senior managers are more concerned with bullying staff then getting the job done, and are very reluctant to support more junior staff, and even reluctant to get the job done for the clients. The firm is still very hierarchical and any manager who has been there since the “sick puppy” days will expect to be treated like a king. Although the top management has a clear and well thought out strategy, in Deloitte’s own words, culture beats strategy. Unless the “old” culture of hierarchy, stifling of free thinking, and workplace bullying is extinguished, the strategy will never come to fruition.

I worked at Deloitte as a contractor (less than an year)

    Pros

None really. Doesn't compare to the other big4's yet thinks its the best

    Cons

Too much politics. Managers and above review your every move and a slight hesitation here and there will see you out of the company. I chose DTT above another big 4 and regretting my decision all the way.

I worked at Deloitte full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Good training, good name to add to your CV, usually they will fund further study, as it is a large organization you are likely to make good contacts

    Cons

Low pay, VERY hierarchical; it is a very formal workplace (may be a pro for some people) so you need to watch what you say in front of partners/senior managers (no jokes), very long hours with very little recognition.

Former Employee - Staff Accountant in Sydney (Australia)
Former Employee - Staff Accountant in Sydney (Australia)

I worked at Deloitte full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    * Work-life balance
    * Met some great people
    * Learnt and got required training to get the hell out of Deloitte

    Cons

    * Too much politics at Deloitte
    * Overlooked on certain promotional opportunities because I do not kiss bottom's
    * A lot of people getting promoted who aren't actually skilled, but just good at kissing bottom's and rubbing partner's egos
    * Unequal opportunity when you see a staff promoted every six months in National Finance, from assistant accountant to financial controller of Risk and doesn't know anything and falls flat on her face, cries because the partner abuses her for her lack of knowledge and reporting incorrect numbers.
    * Harsh reality, the performance reviews mean nothing, partner's already choose who they will promote a few months before the performance reviews even finalise
    * Varying salaries even on different staff levels, some senior consultants earn as much as a manager.
    * CA Program has been changed and no longer provides the choices it used to.
    * Due to tough times in financial services, a lot of staff are being 'pushed out' using methods of natural attritions, no promotions, perform them out - ugly truth!!!!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    * Get rid of certain partners, alternate your internal partners the way you alternate your audit partners.
    * Long standing staff with complaints against them should be reviewed
    * National Finance directors/partner's are useless.

Great culture, equal opportunity employer but a lot of politics to deal with

    • Career Opportunities
Current Employee - Consulting Manager in Sydney (Australia)
Current Employee - Consulting Manager in Sydney (Australia)

I have been working at Deloitte (more than an year)

    Pros

Exposure to clients and business environments is fantastic. Deloitte is not seen as a great pay master but at least 2-3 years of experience at Deloitte is great on the CV. Paid parental leave is significant for Manager and above. Deloitte is highly respected in the industry, so the business card will take you places.

    Cons

A hell lot of politics to deal with, especially between Partners. You need to have alignment to key senior folks who will watch out for you and take care of you. If you are unlucky to be in a position where you are "orphaned" it is hard to navigate the organisation. One has to spend a lot of time building relationships, watching one's back and dealing with the politics.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Better mentoring opportunities to create a cross service line, "holistic" experience for the candidate and make sure they are recognised for the contribution they are making in terms of their willingness to work and their attitude, NOT their utilisation alone.
