You will have a hard time advancing in the union environment. You may have to work an off shift for several years, but it is worth it.
Advice to Senior Management
Management should be a little bit more open minded with taking suggestions from the tradesmen. The environment is often strained between mgmt and the union but it need not be.

Pros
Potential good pay and benefits...or use to be... Cutting edge technology. Good facilities and resources. Great failure analysis department. Lots of great intelligent people...or use to be... Potential to learn a lot about many facets of technology.
Cons
Unbelievable bureaucracy. Handful of engineers carry the brunt, others do little if anything. Too much time spent talking about and reviewing problems. Doesn't utilize automation properly. Hasn't kept up on the latest technology and tools. Too many over-paid big-shots. No good vision or leadership. You know when management starts asking for ideas for products, you're in trouble. Worships PowerPoint and the meeting as some kind of ritual. A "Good Old Boys" legacy club company that couldn't evolve. Perhaps in some way this company deserves kudos for at least trying to hang on as long as they did.
Advice to Senior Management
Retire or get fired. Weed out the do nothings. What comes around goes around. The systematic dis-mantling and destruction of this country has been evolving for several decades now. At what point is enough enough? When there are no longer any good paying jobs to buy our own products?
Pros
Friendly people and work Flexibility Schedules.
Cons
Downsides could start at Engineering Supervisor level. Lack of uneven work distribuation. Four years ago 2 engineers for one project now one Engineer could have 5 projects
Advice to Senior Management
Compare your good highly experienced mid level Engineering Salary Range with the Market Rate since some do match Y2K rates now.
