Pros
As an intern I was given some of the most interesting and exciting projects, not only within the department I applied for. I got to work with interns and experienced colleagues from multiple corporate functions, had real responsibilities and handled cases that had real impact. It was invaluable exposure. The people I worked with were incredibly friendly, helpful, and competent, and I felt truly valued and appreciated for the work I was doing. Our manager and senior executives were also extremely approachable. They very often took time to guide our projects and sometimes had lunch with us to hear our professional interests. Overall, I felt very happy and fortunate that I took this internship. It was really a unique, unparalleled experience.
Cons
At times cross organizational communication was lacking.
Advice to Senior Management
Continue to be open and receptive to interns and to prepare them for full-time positions at Delphi.
Pros
Great place to grow - International opportunities
Cons
Some managers are still Autocratic.
Advice to Senior Management
Listen to employees. Get rid of managers who don't get it
Pros
Practical focus on lean
Varied opportunities
Global arena
Highly Experienced middle management - especially in the U.S.
Strong Process tools and use of statistical problem solving
Cons
No U.S. Manufacturing with shift to Europe.
U.S. employees are deemed expensive and on-going focus on reducing U.S. ranks.
Committed to off shoring engineering even as quality performance and engineering efficiency is imploding and customers are downgrading quality status and placing Delphi in business hold.
Travel policy and Business Decisions not comprehending physical risk to employees due to Mexican locations.
Chapter 11 headcount reductions of experienced people went too far and execution is failing.
Advice to Senior Management
As job market improves you will see a mass exudos of employees who have watched U.S. experienced base be obliterated and yet the same individuals being asked to "bail out" low cost regions repeatedly. You get what you pay for.
Pros
Good pay, good benefits, work hours
Cons
advancement, location, 401k, promotion, visability, growth
Advice to Senior Management
People need the ability to grow
Pros
Innovative products, many employees are great to work with, team effort is visable and some of the senior managers seem to be on the right path.
Cons
Reduced the size of the workforce, but the workload has not decreased. Longer hours and no compensation for additional work and effort. Management has no clue and that group has not declined in size or package.
Advice to Senior Management
Saving pennies, but spending dollars. Lower level employees fund senior management and will continue to leave for employment elsewhere if things do not change.
Pros
The salaries are very competitive.
Cons
The auto industry is always in jeapordy of failing.
Advice to Senior Management
Human Resource Leadership is sub standard and over compensated by industry standards. This was revieled in the bankruptcy courts but never addressed by leadership.
Pros
- At the time, it was a very impressive corporate headquarters
- Lots of opportunity to find opportunities for improvement because the company is so big and basically comprised of the same policies, procedures, and methods of GM.
- Was given plenty of opportunities to travel
- Good people to work with at the corporate level
Cons
- Bad moral at the division level. Many of the baby boomers were just waiting to either get layed off or retire.
Advice to Senior Management
- I was made an offer to work full time, but decided that I had a better opportunity working for an industry leader in agricultural equipment. Mainly due to Chapter 11 bankruptancy of course. Otherwise, I was very pleased to work with corporate employees and was able to find many opportunities for improvement that helped me gain fast recognition. I had this internhip a couple years ago, and it really helped me jumpstart my career.
Pros
Good stable job. People are good to work with. Lots of technology.
Cons
Automotive parts is not a great industry.
Advice to Senior Management
Keep funding new technology
Pros
Strong fraternity of Delphi employees
Very challenging assignments
Excellent global manufacturing system
Ability to grow within the company
Cons
Automotive business dictates the company direction
Senior leadership came from General Motors and lacks knowledge to run an excellent company
Growth seems limited to outside the United States
Advice to Senior Management
Expand outside of automotive more aggressively
Use the same rigor in running the company as was done with the lean manufacturing implementation
Pros
On a personal level, the people at Delphi are some of the best people I have met and are just good, quality human beings.
Cons
There are limited opportunities for growth currently in the company. There also does not appear to be any coherent direction from the senior management as to the strategy of Delphi going forward. Lastly, in the past few years, employees have been treated more as a commodity as opposed to highly valued resources.
Advice to Senior Management
The leadership at Delphi needs to start valuing their employees more. There is also way, way too much bureaucracy at Delphi. Even though headcount has been reduced 30%-40% over the past few years too, the amount of work has not decreased. As a result, morale is extremely among employees.
