I have been working at Deluxe Corporation full-time

    Pros

Many good people working hard to support larger and more complex structure. Senior management has been somewhat successful in selling a positive story to investors. Regular meetings with employees convey results and highlight successes and failures. Management cannot be accused of hiding in their corner offices.

    Cons

Long term strategy is secretive if it exists at all. Organic growth is the white whale for most companies and Deluxe is no different. As a result, Deluxe is more tactical, blocking and tackling to offset weak results with acquisitions and expense reduction. Schram is a master at this and the right man for the job if you are a shareholder - not so much for employees that ride the waves of uncertainty and results volatility. Culture is wary of layoffs and capricious firings. Managers hire and fire too often, rather than investing time into training and building teams. There is heavy turnover in departments that have poor supervisors and managers. This ripples out to nearby departments. The divisions are plagued with stale thinking and very focused on defending market position rather than creating a new growth story or innovating existing products and services. Post-acquisition strategy often poorly executed, has inadvertently slowed momentum of the new business through clumsy integration and poor sales positioning.

    Advice to Management

There are really not many alternatives to what Deluxe is doing, which is keeping the company chugging along. Hire some game changers and put your best people on acquisition integration. This company will be around another 100 years.

I worked at Deluxe Corporation full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Schedule was flexible and tuition assistance. Health Benefits was okay as well.

    Cons

Compensation was a lot lower than the recruiter let on. Be sure to pin them down on what exactly you can expect to make.

    Advice to Management

Just ensure that those doing the recruiting are honest about the compensation package.

I worked at Deluxe Corporation full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

It is a learning experience. Fast paced, high stress, politically challenging, with good benefits and vacation options.

    Cons

Very limited room for advancement. Company seems focused on downsizing and outsourcing to cut costs. Employees are an expendable commodity. Compensation is on the low end of industry averages.

    Advice to Management

It would be better to keep the working knowledge in-house. Outsourced talent changes frequently. If you sweep dedicated personnel out the door, it will cost more in retraining, and employee time spent to understand operating procedures will increase. Take care of your Talent, and your Talent will take care of you.

I worked at Deluxe Corporation full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Competitive salary. Very good about flex-time and telecommuting. Profit sharing and 401k match is good. Co-workers are great to work with.

    Cons

Groton MA location not a big shop; most work from home 3 or more days/week. You spend most of your time on the phone in conference calls with outsourcing company and corporate office in Shoreview, MN. Because Groton is not the corporate office, there's not much company culture there - you kind-of feel "left out" of most things.

I worked at Deluxe Corporation full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Company has processes and infrastructure suitable for a company of its size.

    Cons

Company has focus on Wall Street. The dwindling cash cow of the check printing business is the real focus of the company. If in high tech, it's not a good place to join. If you aren't in the major P/L, there is no room for growth or success within the company.

    Advice to Management

Management appears to understand the street and to manage to their expectations with admirable accuracy and efficiency.

    Pros

Great group of people. Company constantly tries to improve the lists and tools for employees. Pay was good for start as well as prizes for performance.

    Cons

Started out good but pressure to sell increased on employees when management ideas didn't work. The warm market lists were more cold calls than management said it would be. expect to make cold calls.

    Advice to Management

be upfront and tell employees you are making mostly cold calls. Continue seeking new lists. Make sure to give employees every chance to succeed

I worked at Deluxe Corporation (More than a year)

    Pros

Concept of bridging all the different business silo's under one solution to a customer base is terrific.

    Cons

Not being able to internally mold the different business units together to support the customer base is a real issue. Too many chiefs with their own agenda not looking out for the greater good

    Advice to Management

Break down the silo's and invest in IT.

    Cons

Do more with less is killing IT department credibility.

    Advice to Management
